HARTFORD, Conn. -- Hartford Archbishop Henry J. Mansell said Thursday
he is working with legislative leaders to find a solution to the issue of
emergency contraception for rape victims that respects Roman Catholic
beliefs.
While not providing any details, Mansell said his discussions with House
Speaker James Amann, D-Milford, and Senate President Donald Williams,
D-Brooklyn, have centered on an unnamed third party that would make
the drug, known as Plan B, available to rape victims treated at the
state's four Catholic hospitals.

or rape crisis advocate coming to a Catholic hospital and administering
Plan B. But asked whether the solution would be a third party coming
into a Catholic hospital, Mansell said "not necessarily."
This is the second year that some state lawmakers are trying to require
all hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception,
known as the morning-after pill, to rape victims.
