Don't give up the fight for choice on abortion
Cross posting from the Editorial forum:

How about taking the offensive for once? Here's a start: Go after the Hyde Amendment, a law that for more than 30 years has yoked poor women to their unwanted pregnancies by preventing them from using federal Medicaid money for an abortion. These are destitute women. How is it in any way moral to force them to have children they can't afford? Here's another idea: Demand that restrictions on abortions at military hospitals be lifted so our deployed women service members aren't left stranded. How about the slogan "Support our troops' constitutional rights — you know, the ones they are fighting and dying for."

1. Frame it differently with one simple mission statement
"The government will not come between you and your Doctor"

and then refuse to discuss it any further. Abortion is a legal procedure. There should be no discussion.

2. Men who impregnate women should pay for abortions
I'm a feminist and I believe the men who impregnate adult women should pay for abortions. Why should men have NO RESPONSIBILITY whatsoever regarding sex?

5. Yep
And some girls lie about "taking care of things." That, however, does not excuse guys for not responding, "Great, I'll do double duty and take care of it too--just to be sure."

7. Men should pay half.
But why should the woman have to pay all the cost for the abortion, if it takes two to tango? That should be an equally split bill. And even then it isn't equal, since the woman is the one who is physically having the abortion and undertaking the risk. Men should pay half of the bill at least. If men don't want babies, they should wear condoms and only have sexual partners who are on birth control as well. End of story.

9. In a perfect world...
where all men act responsibly. A lot of women have abortions BECAUSE of an irresponsible (or worse) man. Great if a man is willing to help. But coverage should be available no matter what.

8. nobody seems to have addressed the actual issue

Go after the Hyde Amendment, a law that for more than 30 years has yoked poor women to their unwanted pregnancies by preventing them from using federal Medicaid money for an abortion.

Whatever health coverage a woman has, require, by statute/regulation, that it cover all services relating to pregnancy, including abortion.

We've been doing it for years up here in Canada. Nobody's opinion is relevant to medically necessary services.

And anybody who thinks that abortion is not a medically necessary service hadn't better start.
