10-year-old's pregnancy fuels Mexican abortion debate
10-year-old's pregnancy fuels Mexican abortion debate

By the CNN Wire Staff
April 19, 2010 10:18 p.m. EDT

Mexico's abortion debate became particularly heated in 2007, when Mexico City passed a law legalizing abortion.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Girl, 10, has been pregnant too long to have a legal abortion in her state, Quintana Roo
Groups allege state didn't inform her of her abortion rights
Stepfather is accused of raping the girl
Groups call for federal officials and the U.N. to investigate the state's handling of the case

Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- A pregnant 10-year-old, allegedly raped by her stepfather, has become the latest lightning rod in the country's heated abortion debate.

The girl's stepfather has been arrested. But advocates on both sides of the issue say their battle is just beginning.

"This girl is much more than an isolated case," said Adriana Ortiz-Ortega, a researcher at Mexico's National Autonomous University who has written two books on abortion in Mexico, "and there is much more influence now from conservative groups that are trying to prevent the legalization of abortion."

Abortion is legal in Mexico's capital city, but prohibited or significantly restricted in most of the country's states. The girl's home state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan peninsula, allows abortion in cases of rape during the first 90 days of the pregnancy. But the 10-year-old girl is at 17½ weeks, nearly a month past that limit.

8. Not just that, childbirth will rip her body apart
There is no way any child that young should have to carry any pregnancy to term. Undoubtedly, she'll need a C-section. Trying to force her into childbirth would damage her health for the rest of her life. A C-section will be traumatic enough.

Abortion is occasionally the only real choice in a heartbreaking situation like this one. All those old men in dresses need to butt the hell out.

Her rapist wants deballing.

5. you may have this story mixed up with the 9 year-old Brazilian child who was raped
by her stepfather in 2009.

http://classic.feministing.com/archives/014073.html

That case was memorable because the Roman Catholic Church excommunicated those who supported the law in Brazil that makes abortion legal in the case of rape.

Instead of supporting a child who was raped, however, the Roman Catholic church tried to stop the abortion. So, support for the Roman Catholic church indicates support for these sorts of child abusive tactics.

Not surprising, of course, coming from a sexist institution that also equates women in the priesthood with pedophilia... and, of course, the irony is not lost on the majority at this site that the church talks about pedophilia after decades of enabling it among the priesthood because, just as in the case of the raped child, a 9 YEAR OLD CHILD, the church sides with rapists and pedophiles over females.

6. In the mid-90s an 8 year old Mexican girl had a baby.
I didn't even think that was possible. Who was the sick bastard who would abuse a small child?

12. the anti-choice idiots on this site are so repulsed by TRUTH
that they take a NEWS TOPIC like this and toss it into this forum.

If you want to know part of the problem with DU right now, it's that social conservatives think they have the right to censor those who know the truth about their positions.

http://wireupdate.com/wires/9084/11-year-old-gives-birth-in-southern-mexico-after-being-denied-abortion-despite-rape/

she gave birth in August but I couldn't find any information on her health or that of the baby. I wonder how accurate the article is as it seems unlikely a girl that young would make it to 38 weeks.

14. You see - that's why we need a tighter fence

Now they are getting little ones pregnant, so they can be smuggled in easier and fit through the cracks in the fence and then - Boom - Anchor Babies all over the place.

17. Punishing the victim?!
Let's assume a position in which we want to enable this girl to abort, meaning let's evaluate this using a logic that will be favorable to achieving this goal.
That said, point blank, I think the umbrella of two counts makes this a non-issue. The girl is 10 years old, we're not talking 15,14, 13, or even 12...we are talking 10 years old! In the united States, ten years olds (5th graders) are still in elementary school. The other thing is, the girl was raped, and anyone at any age, should not be subject to the penalty of having to birth a child because they were victim to a crime.
