Legislators debate ban on mind-blowing 'magic mint'
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 04:13 PM by flashl
On Web sites touting the mind-blowing powers of salvia divinorum, come-ons to buy the hallucinogenic herb are accompanied by warnings: "Time is running out! ... stock up while you still can."

That's because salvia is being targeted by lawmakers concerned that the inexpensive and easy-to-obtain plant could become the next marijuana. Eight states have already placed restrictions on salvia, and 16 others, including Florida, are considering a ban or have previously.

"As soon as we make one drug illegal, kids start looking around for other drugs they can buy legally. This is just the next one," said Florida state Rep. Mary Brandenburg, who has introduced a bill to make possession of salvia a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Some say legislators are overreacting to a minor problem, but no one disputes that the plant impairs judgment and the ability to drive.

Florida's lawmakers are worried about 'our' judgment?

1. Here's the bottom line
I have heard many cases where men get drunk then go home and beat up their wife and kids. I have yet to hear of any man smoking a doobie then going home to do the same. In any case, if a drug impairs judgement, don't drive, stay home and enjoy it.

3. Yup.
I reached adulthood in the mid-70s. I saw a *lot* of pot use. And not once did I EVER see someone high on pot get belligerent. Never...unless they mixed it with alcohol or some other drug.

2. So, tell me again, why are 'drugs' illegal, but kids are killing themselves with stuff out of
their parents' medicine cabinet?

4. They can not forbid the whole biosphere
The world is full of plants one can get high on, from common spices and the fly algaric to more obscure plants and mushrooms. In the end they'll have to forbid anyone to ingest anything not bought in an approved supermarket. Too bad these loonies have the might of the state at their disposal.

5. Fuck this stupid country.
This is the most policed nation on earth, i swear it sweems people in North Korea have more freedoms than we do. Salvia is not a dangerous drug, about as harmful as pot. So not at all. It does produce a markedly different result than pot though. Very unique. What ever happened to personal freedoms? The only thing we are allowed to decide to do ourselves are the state sponsered, make them richer drugs alcohol and tobacco. Fuck alcohol and tobacco, they are addictive, ciggarettes make you stink and die. Alcohol makes you beligerent and violent, or it makes you want to have sex with anyone nearby, which gets many, many people in a very bad situation. I have never, nor have I ever heard of anyone who got high and beat their wife or had sex with someone they wish they wouldnt have. Many problems could be solved with the legalization of weed.
