From the OP link:

As I wrote in the Hill.com's influential congressional blog today, Obama's cynical rebuff was short-sighted and disrespectful to a large percentage of his supporters. After all, was it not this very same "online audience" that donated heavily to Obama's Presidential campaign and ultimately carried him to the White House?

My message:

The people that you were laughing at with your dismissive comments about legalization of marijuana know that it will not be long until you and the people in the democratic party once again come asking for our help.

I think we can remember, "The answer is no, I don't think that a good strategy."

10. The escalation of the war on drugs
I watched Hillary Clinton discussing the problem in the war on drugs last night, and found myself thoroughly disgusted with the whole antiquated attitude. The solution, they seem to feel, is to lower the demand in the U.S. for drugs. As I see it, the more they try to control it, the more money the drug cartels make. You cannot legislate human behavior. They have tried. People will do what they choose whether it's smoking a joint or having an abortion...legal or no.

When I was first a toker, I could purchase an oz. for $5 (yes, I'm that old). Now the prices are prohibitive and will only go up as the "war" is escalated. Who will "win" this war? The drug cartels, as they have for the last 30 years.

Obviously, we haven't learned a thing from history. When they implemented Prohibition, it didn't stop people from drinking, the drinking just went underground and became more expensive as it became controlled by the Rum-runners and gun-runners and the mafia. When they repealed prohibition, they were able to TAX alcohol and use it as a revenue for the federal government.

I was not a participant in President Obama's online town hall, but have read his glib response to a very real issue. I must say I'm disappointed especially because he was once-upon-a-time a toker himself as were Bill and Hillary Clinton. Shame on their hypocrisy. I wonder if Mr. Obama had been president during prohibition if he would have still had his cocktail parties?

I speak specifically of marijuana here, but personally feel all drugs should be legalized and regulated and taxed. That's how you end the so-called war. You take the illegality out of it. What will the drug cartel's do? Go legit?

Now I'm starting to see articles about forcing people who need food stamps or welfare or unemployment to have random drug tests. What the hell??? I had to take a pee test for the job I have right now. I found it rather humiliating. It is absolutely nobody's business what I put in my body and yet they feel perfectly justified in violating my 5th Amendment right not to incriminate myself. Everybody knows that the only drug that stays in the body more then 24 hrs. is pot, the least dangerous of "drugs" (actually a herb) out there.

I gave up alcohol 25 years ago because I'm alcoholic. But now I risk incarceration and financial ruin because I like a little buzz, just as my drinking friends are allowed to do without any consequence except maybe a hangover (which I do NOT miss one bit).

I quit toking for a number of years, but then was diagnosed with cancer. As I went through chemo (which I wouldn't even wish on bin Laden) the ONLY thing that eased by nausea and anxiety was pot.

But why give comfort to the ill? We were put here to suffer, right??

And isn't this just more class warfare? Pretty soon, the only Americans who will be able to light up will be the affluent, as with everything else. Guess the working class folks just need to keep on working until we die. Why should we get any enjoyment in our off time?

I had a friend one time who said if you put a bunch of people in a room and half smoked pot and the other half were drinking, which side of the room was more likely to have a fight. Doubt it would be the stoners :smoke:

Thanks for letting me vent. I find this whole topic very frustrating.:banghead:
