4. What about the internet?
I suspect there are multiple sites online where you can watch it live.

8. Oh yes, I absolutely plan to watch it on the internet.
The kids won't be able to see it though. We don't have smart boards.

I'm an itinerant. I certainly hope the homeroom teachers will show it. I will try to give the kids something to keep them busy while I catch as much as possible of the ceremony.

Actually, I'm praying for a snow day on the 20th so I can stay home and watch it on TV. If not, I will watch the re-run on C-Span if I have to stay up all night.

1. My guess is that there will be GOP leaning teachers who will bypass the inauguration.
Not much anyone can do about it.

We are having an interesting debate with her over whether we should watch it in class or not. Hence, this poll.

19. WTF
"bypassing?"

I'm not a republican-leaning teacher; I'm a left-wing teacher.

I'm not showing the inauguration. I don't consider it "bypassing," since it's not on my very long list of things I'm already supposed to accomplish that day.

And you are right. There's not a damned thing you can do about it.

I cannot remember ever watching an inauguration, or any of my colleagues showing an inauguration, at school. We sure didn't take time out to watch GWB.

Why is this one so special?

20. I have always watched it with my class
Skipped 05. But have watched it in class every other year since 1984. And I can remember watching inaugurations when I was in elementary school.

My friend's school is having a big party that day. The kids are bringing food and they are having a big schoolwide luncheon.

Our superintendent sent out an email asking us what special activities we had planned. The district was sending out a press release listing activities across the district.

This is a very big deal to the African American community. I think we need to honor and respect that.

22. That makes sense.
I have to look hard to find AA students at my school. I know there is one in 3rd grade. I miss teaching a more diverse group. My school is mostly white, with a sprinkling of hispanics in each class.

We've had plenty of conversations about racism, and about the election within the classroom. We covered the election heavily. Our little rural white christian community is heavily divided between Obama fans and those that think he's a muslim, a commie, a liberal, etc.; we've been debunking those claims all along. Last week we were discussing fallacies. I asked them what fallacies they'd heard about Obama, and it took the rest of the period to nail them all down.

I've truly never taught in a school that took a day out to watch an inauguration. I think I watched part of Clinton's. I wanted to see Maya Angelou. Other than that, I've never watched one myself. I've never associated it as anything more than a ceremonial event. For me, the big moment is election night, when a winner is declared, and what the winner has to say at that time. The rest, other than the oath, is window dressing.

I can catch a clip of the oath all over the place.

Meanwhile, I'm under the gun to produce data. I've got people watching to see how my classroom time is spent. We have one team member who covers current events for our students, so he'll deal with the inauguration there, as noted below. I didn't ask him if that means watching part of it, or something else.

3. I have a TV and I'm turning it on.
It has nothing to do with my class, and I'm not stopping other activities (my students are usually working on projects), but I am *not* missing history as it happens, nor causing them to.

10. I'm taking the day off to watch it myself
and drink my champagne. I don't want to miss a moment of it.

I will give the sub the option of watching the inaguration...it isn't my subject area but it's so important I don't care what the bosses say. I don't think they'll care actually.

I've got a laptop and a projector, so if I can get a decent streaming video, I will show it to my students!

16. All the school systems in our area are taking the day off for the inauguration.
Of course, this is the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Ours is Montgomery County, Maryland, just north of DC, the last to decide to take it off, because so many teachers and students would not be there anyways.
