Wait a second... Wendy Portillo (child abuser extradinare) is still teaching?
So my mother was watching Fox and Friends this morning (hey problem not mine), and they had Alex Barton and his mom on. I didn't watch it though she did record it so I might (even if its Fox its a story about an abused special needs kid, considering my interest and all the studying I have done it only makes sense that I watch it, plus Fox and Friendds from what I have heard has never been that crazy). But the interesting thing I heard from it, the teacher is going to be able to start teaching in a month or two when her suspision is up. This brings up the question... what does it take to fire a teacher? She publically humilated a student, brings him to tears, and that isn't enough to fire her. I am sorry... this is what I hate about the public school system, what happens when she gets another aspie/autie student, same ole ****?

3. A few things
A) Private schools can fire teachers who aren't all unionized.

B) Parents have a choice to pull their kids out of private schools, they don't have that choice with public schools (unless they are rich).

C) Two wrongs don't make a right (or something like that).

D) I have consistantly advocated schools for special needs kids, many of which are private and charter schools, and you can bet this wouldn't be tolerated there.

E) SHE IS A CHILD ABUSER, TEACHING... am I the only one who finds something wrong with that...

4. I don't think that was the point -
this isn't a "which is better" posting - it's about the travesty of letting a person like that NEAR ANY CHILD!

There is no way in hell I would EVER allow that "teacher" to be in my child's classroom. I hope all parents refuse to let their child be assigned to her.

6. Sadly, she has a lot of support
I went onto some of the local message boards after this all happened, so many people, on both sides of the political spectrum stood with her and blamed Alex for everything.

2. update on Alex - HONOR ROLL
JUPITER, FL-- Alex Barton, now a second-grader, has made the honor roll at Jupiter Academy, where he enrolled this year.

This year is his first in a mainstream classroom setting after being voted out of his classroom as a kindergarten student.

Alex, then 5, gained national attention when his teacher, Wendy Portillo, allowed his classmates to vote him out of his Morningside Elementary classroom. He left the school and got homebound services for first grade.

Alex attends Jupiter Academy through the MacKay scholarship, which provides money for students with special needs to attend a private school.

5. Thats really good
Makes you wonder though, he probably still would be at the public school if not for this. No doubt he got the scholarship because of his "famousness". I doubt he would be thrieving quite so much in public school...

7. There has to be a pattern of incompetence shown
or the teacher has to be criminally charged and convicted. If this was a first time incident the teacher is usually suspended. I'm not defending this teacher at all, just answering your question. In any occupation you have to go through steps toward firing: written warning, suspension with pay, suspension without pay, etc. Teaching is no different.

As I have stated before, private and charter schools have just as many issues but are not required to reveal incidents because of thier private and charter status. They can also kick students out without recourse, too.

Why did the board decide on just the one-yr suspension?

10. Anyone ELSE?
Someone who isn't a right-wing nutcase, perhaps?

11. Once again, agreeing with Arianna Huffington doesn't make one a right-wing nutcase
But you got a more likely solution?
