So I'm sitting in a meeting of the women Dems in my district - why I'm bad
Didn't want to come but want to support this group because they do a lot to support our good Dems in this state. I have decided I'm so disgusted with Arne and co that I'm going to focus on local issues.

So I'm sitting here trying to look interested and they introduce a resolution about NCLB. And someone makes a motion to approve it.

My neighbor poked me and I am up on my feet before I know what I'm doing. Not even sure what the motion was. And I start venting. I tell these ladies the only resolution involving NCLB we should be approving is one that recommends it be abolished. I tell them that I voted for Obama but he lost me completely when he praised the mass firing in RI. I say Arne did not do anything in Chicago in 10 years that raised test scores and he converted high schools to military academies. And I ask these women if that's what they want for our children.

Then I launched into RTTT. Told them what it means and asked if they were willing to allow this administration to redirect Title I funds to a few schools rather than all schools serving low income kids.

And I described what Ravitch refers to as the ponzi scheme that comprises the current test score reporting.

When I stopped a woman across the room stood up and said "Thank you". She explained she is a state rep and agreed completely with everything I said.

And the women agreed not to approve the resolution!!

A small victory but a victory none the less.

1. It has to start someplace...
I found in my experience with local political entities tied to the party are shy about supporting or even discussing controversial issues.

Let the games begin...

2. Good for you! More of us need to get involved in...
this. My brother & I were talking about our congresscritter who is a bluedog and I said we are just going to have to start going to the county meetings and making noise.

Education is a vital issue that we are going to have to work hard to take back from corps.

3. I think you're one of many
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 01:10 PM by Warpy
I know I've been out and around and waiting in a line for something when somebody has parroted a conventional talking point here or there and I've let fly--politely but firmly and with all the facts. I've had more agreement than disagreement and quite a few parrots have told me they'd changed their minds based on what I said.

We can't rely on the media to do their job. It seems like it's up to us.

6. Good work!
Thanks for speaking up! The more people become aware of the privatization schemes the better. I've tried keeping our local union membership informed and they're . Maybe they think the storm won't affect them.

10. Another vote for the status quo
This is just so sad and exactly why Democrats lose. Duncan wants accountability with Title I, equity in actual education. He doesn't want to just keep putting money into schools that don't educate. People are fed up with locking kids up because they live in school districts that don't educate. The only opportunity these kids have is their neighborhood school. It either needs to have at least 75% of kids at grade level, or move out of the way for someone who can.

If local teachers don't like this, then do something to change those schools.

19. Thank you Hannahbell..you are a voice of truth& Thank you proud2BlibKansan
Thank you for our children and all the children of this nation of ours..thank you for exposing the militarization of our public schools..

I am so disgusted by the very people promoting silence about this ..that are the very people who benefited from schools in this nation without Militarization and robbing poor children of the education they deserve!

Ignore the a-holes that try to shut you up..they don't deserve your spit!

I have learned much about this subject from proud2BlibKansan, Hannah Bell and Mad floridan.

You should only be applauded for caring so much about the children of this nation!

I don't write much in these threads, but I read them all, and have spoken out as well in my state because of what I have learned from you!

I salute you ..and I salute the Teachers of this nation that are fighting the fight for our children..against this administration and the previous one that are evil..and that has done everything in their power to destroy public schools and bust teachers unions.

I have never been more disgusted in other Americans, that would try to silence the truth! No matter what party that is involved , hurting the children of this nations education for greed and nefarious reasons!

Please.. all of us continue to speak out about this..I am in Florida and I see our public schools system being destroyed and only have the knowledge to fight what is going on, with those of you willing to educate the rest of us about this issue!!

I am formerly an elected delegate in my state, so I can educate others with an audience ..if I know the facts.

Again Thank you all for sharing your intelligence in the matter..and your perseverance among a bunch of a-holes that are trying to shut you up!

You have an audience ..we are reading and we are learning..and we can all share what we learn from you!

You have my honest respect and Thank you!

46. boilerplate talking points is absolutely right
and privatizing our school system under the 'business model' will result in the same situation we've seen with every other public service which was privatized-higher costs and lower quality. It's a scam just like all the Wall Street scams and it will have the same results.

48. Surely you can't count beyond "two" ?
Opposing legislation that you think is harming kids is not the same thing as supporting the status quo.

No doubt P2B wants lots of changes to the status quo... just not the ones that RTTT/NCLB have given us.
