Reno mom wants to raise $1 million for Washoe schools
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 10:17 AM by tonysam
Absolutely pathetic to make a school district into a charity case. She won't get a dime from me to support those crooks:

A Reno mom and businesswoman is launching a multifaceted campaign to raise $1 million in 30 days for the Washoe County School District, which is struggling with a $33 million shortfall.

Real estate agent Allie Leckie said Wednesday the It Takes a Community effort, which starts May 15, would seek $20 or more from 50,000 residents, about 12 percent of the county population.

She said even if people don't have children in school, the donations are "an investment in our future."

"This impacts all of us greatly," said Leckie, who has six children -- ages 14 to 30 -- and two grandchildren. "These are our doctors, these are our attorneys, these are our news writers. Without an education, they have no future."

Why would people think this is a good idea while the Gibbons nonsense of "gift certificates" for teachers is not?

1. Always was my favorite bumper sticker
The thing about "all will be right with the world when the schools are fully funded, and the Pentagon has to hold a bake sale to buy a B2 bomber."

2. There are a lot of people in Nevada and elsewhere who would LOVE the idea of schools
being charity cases instead of having to pay taxes for them. This is one of the reasons I find this fundraiser so repellent.

3. If you can raise extra money from people who can afford it then why would

you not support this? Your shortfall is happening NOW. Getting money from raised taxes would take at least a year. Yes, it's unfortunate that school districts all over the country are having to cut their budgets, but if a mother wants to raise some money, great.

4. Because it is relegating these schools into charity cases.
It plays right into the libertarian mindset which is rampant in Nevada which says why should I pay for something I don't use.

It's as offensive as Gibbons' "gift certificates."

9. Funny you should say that...

My town sends about $70 million of our property taxes back to the state to pay for other schools. We do however get to keep $35m so I guess we should be thankful. We came close to losing our elementary foreign language programs and many other programs are in danger year after year because we don't have a choice in paying for something we don't use.

Our private educational foundation raises about $3 million a year from our community to keep programs we find are vital. Last year we used some of that money to give our teachers a 5 percent pay raise.

Charity you say? Maybe... However, 70% of my taxes are being taken away by the state. All seven of our school's are rated "Exemplary" by the state and it's our money and commitment to our district that helps keep it that way.

5. Because the answer is to fund schools appropriately, not to turn them into charities
This mom would get far more bang for her buck if she lobbied her state legislature for adequate funding.

6. This Mom is trying to do something NOW. It will take more time for the legislature
to act, and much more time after that for state revenues to be collected to fill in that hole.

7. I know this district, and it is quite corrupt.
There is NO way for anybody to account for the monies raised.

I find this stunt by a well-to-do parent offensive.
