A charter in our area is promising new enrollees a Wii video game system.

I am reminded of several years ago before we had charters when a middle school in the district drastically improved its attendance when all the kids who had perfect attendance 1st quarter were given a free pair of tennis shoes. The outcry from the public was loud. How dare a school district waste tax dollars this way! The parents should buy shoes for their kids, not the school district! So of course the program was discontinued.

But I don't hear any taxpayers complaining about the Wii incentive. Not a peep.

Meanwhile, this story really saddened me tonight. One of our high schools with a long and proud history in the community graduated its last class tonight. The school is closing due to declining enrollment.
