July 19
Tomorrow is the day the teachers in our district who are going to be laid off are going to be notified of their layoffs.

Can you imagine having to wait for nearly two months AFTER the end of the school year, until a month before you report back, to find out if you still have a job??

Anyway, I was hoping my friends here could send some good thoughts this way. I'm okay and don't have to worry about a layoff but my heart is aching for those who do.

6. Yes it is
Our district has closed 40% of our schools. Kids are being crammed into larger classes. One of our schools had 400 kids last year and is projected to have 1000 this year.

10. That is really cruel. They aren't even giving them time to search for another position.
Is this an annual occurrence? Perhaps your union needs stronger wording about furloughs in the next contract?

13. There are no other teaching jobs
All districts are cutting back.

We have good language concerning furloughs in our contract. But yes we should maybe ask for a timeline. But this is only the 2nd time in 30+ years we have had layoffs. Usually we have the opposite problem - too many openings and not enough applicants.

15. Sadly, that is so true....
The job situation has even deteriorated since last year. One of my relatives found himself in a similar situation last year and had to move to another state to find a position. That is what I was thinking of--- if someone had to pick up and move, there is not enough time before school starts. The districts don't seem to take into consideration the human fall-out of such drastic cutbacks.

Hoping for the best for your colleagues. Let us know, OK?

22. Can I imagine? Don't have to. York, Pa furloughed 32 July 12.
And guess what? Money is NOT the reason. The school board chose to increase class sizes, per head of the school board,
"only" by7,8,9 students in each classes. Class size last year was about 26 students.

These inner city kids do 100% better when teachers can give them more individual attention / time. My goodness, let's make
sure that can NOT happen!

Our school board members sit on the boards of the local charter schools, and send their children to the charters, even though
charter schools test results are no better than the public schools.
