1. They do make one important point. You don't have to hurt the bully badly
You do have to get one punch in so that he knows you can hurt him. That alone will get him to stop seeing you as an easy mark.

But you do have to hurt him once. It's all a bully will ever understand.

3. As a teacher I can't support that
We can't be encouraging kids to hit each other at school. Sorry.

4. Of course you can't and neither can I.
They need to wait until they're off school property.

5. IME kids need to know they can tell an adult and have bullying stop.

I tried walking away and avoiding the bully, but he kept bothering. It was my friend who of his own initiative knocked the bully's block off. Apparently the bully ran crying to the principal. (And everyone in the school just knew our principal meant business.) Everyone, including our relevant immediate teachers, was called down to the office. The principal chewed out the bully and then the teachers for letting this get so far. In private the teachers chewed me and my friend out basically for not telling them of the playground problems going on.

EDIT: Ah, yes, now I remember. We had in fact told our teachers previously, but the bullying had continued. And I do now recall me an my friend thinking about involving the principal, but ... my friend took matters into his own hands, as per above.

Interestingly, our friendship drifted a few years later because he was a bit of a bully himself (but never towards me) and eventually found himself in scarier situations involving weapons. He ended up in local law enforcement and I suspect he got killed in the line of duty.
