Attn teachers: Reduce/Recycle program for schools
I found this posting in the Frugal & Energy Efficient Group on DU posted by WillParkinson: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=353x2972

The Ring Leader
Recycling Program

More than 12,000 schools, business and groups around the world have helped to save the environment by participating in the free Ring Leader Recycling Program. Participants in the program collect ring carriers and ship them back to Hi-Cone. The ring carriers are used in open loop recycling. This helps to reduce litter and waste in our landfills as well as the amount of natural resources needed to create new plastic products.

It important to consider that the most effective way to recycle Hi-Cone ring carriers is to include them in local recycling programs, wherever #4 LDPE or mixed plastics are collected. This is the most environmentally friendly way to recycle your rings for several reasons.

Using Local Recycling Sources:

— Saves on the fuel that is consumed in the shipping of the rings from one location to another.

— Saves on the packaging that is required for shipping the rings, which, in turn, creates more materials to be recycled.

— Increases the success of your local recycling programs, helping to ensure their continued growth.

For these “green” reasons, it is best that you check to see what local recycling sources are available to you first. Here are two good sources to check to see if #4 LDPE is collected in your area:

* Earth911
* 1800recycling.com

If, however, recycling of #4 LDPE does not exist in your area, you can join our free Ringleader recycling program!

Ring Leader Recycling Program is designed for both formal and informal educational venues to help minimizing the damaging effects of litter on the environment. The Ring Leader Recycling Program is an educational experience, involving recyclable six-pack rings and the Three R's — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

After you join the Ring Leader Recycling Program, you will receive a FREE kit (one per group) containing a tree, and information on returning the rings for recycling (postage paid by Hi-Cone).

Joining the program is an easy, three-step process:

1. Confirm an interest with your group or school.
2. Join the program by filling out the form to receive a FREE kit (one per school or group).
3. Implement your recycling efforts as a total school project with kit materials received from Hi-Cone.

Once you have implemented the Ring Leader Recycling Program, you can order additional supplies from Hi-Cone when necessary.

Please pass this on to other teachers.

1. Great post. Some additional ideas.
I'll try to be brief but could go on forever.

Teaching about energy and resources is a far too often missed opportunity for all to gain while doing the right thing for the planet and the future.

These topics fit all subject areas: math, ELA, Social Studies, History, Science, Economics, Geography, etc.

And, schools are able to save money as teachers and students have more interesting place-based, real world activities in the classroom.

Increasingly, local waste management, water, and utility companies will work with schools in several ways, all of which make schools better.

For teachers, watch the video at http://www.storyofstuff.com/

Call your local agencies listed above, work with an administrator or curriculum director.

3. All of our schools routinely recycle.
Our recycling bins are bigger than our trash bins.

We routinely reuse, too. All kinds of things. From school milk cartons for classroom craft/projects, to file folders to magazines, if we can find a way to reuse it, we do.

4. Excellent! I can recommend another opportunity, textile and shoe recycling.
This outfit will deliver a collection container with your school's logo on it.

They collect clothes and other textiles, and shoes, and later sort them and clean the best of these to send to poor populations that need them.

Also, they'll pay 2¢/pound for what you collect.

It can divert a lot of what would otherwise go to landfills.

The money isn't the point, though, kids will get behind the idea of recycling these things AND helping others.

5. I'll check into this.
We have a FAN advocate who provides coats and shoes to kids who need them, and we have a "garage sale" to benefit our FAN program every December, where kids can shop among all the donations for family xmas gifts. We also host a local food bank one evening a week. This is one more thing we can add to what we do as a community to support each other.

6. Proud of you, LWolf, and your community.
:toast:

I only learned of this collection company last week, but seems legit.

It might not fit all schools but I think it's right for small cities and larger.

Also not sure if they're in every state and region.

Keep up the good work.

7. Thanks for the positive.
Tomorrow is the first day of school. I'm grateful to work with a positive staff, a mostly positive district, and within a positive community. I want the first day to set a great tone for the rest of the year.
