Obama Administration Celebrates New School Year
"The Department of Education today released progress on key department-wide education initiatives in advance of convening the winners of the Race to the Top Competition for a day of workshops. Additionally, Education Secretary Arne Duncan will also address an international education symposium in Toronto and highlight a successful turnaround school in North Carolina and then join President Obama for his Back to School speech to students encouraging them to study hard and stay in school.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said, "All across America, there is a growing understanding that education is everyone's responsibility. This week we salute the courage and commitment of students, teachers and stakeholders at every level who are supporting public education."

The attached summary highlights progress on education, including distributing nearly $100 billion in Recovery Act funds to help save an estimated 400,000 jobs, support historic reforms at the state and local level, and boost college enrollment with billions of dollars in additional grants and loans."

1. THen why can't I get another teaching position?
The rules, the regs, the more money I have to pay out to be a teacher, and I do it all, and then find out...gee, Beav! You need to do more!

Our students are being robbed of real education. NCLB has to go!

3. Continuing education
Was teaching in CA, after having been a teacher in NV. Had to pass four tests, each costing a goodly sum. Now am in AZ because there are no jobs in CA that will pay me at my level...they want to hire mostly those who are new to teaching, therefore cost less in salary pay out.

So, am here in AZ, and for all the certifications I received, including teaching at the multi-cultural level, AZ will not accept those certifications and am back to square one, and will have to shell out several hundred dollars more before this time next year to meet the AZ criteria to be a fully AZ certified teacher. Oh! Did I tell you have been teaching since 1992, and in Education since 1976? Have two degrees in Education, am two credits away from my Masters, and am basically the low man on the totem pole...again.

And as for what I pay out when actually teaching? The teacher class allowance does not even begin to cover the needs of my students. I usually end up spending close to $1800/year out of pocket so my kids can have the basics they need, and the things necessary to extend lesson plans so they all can benefit no matter what their leaning level/pace, and also to help them meet the standards. Dedication I've got...job...meh!

4. It's pretty ugly in CA
Newer teachers have been getting the boot, regardless of qualification.

Administrators are putting pressure on teachers to pass everyone, just to hold on to funds.

I know I"m in the minority around here but I'm optimistic about Obama and education.

Good luck in AZ :hi:

5. Thanks!
Am currently hoping to get a .5 SpEd Resource position that open here. After 4 times online registering for the position, it still wasn't showing tot he school with the job. After repeated phone calls, my application is now in front of the admin of that school. Online snafus galore, not only with this one district, but with several others. Have been correcting errors all over the place just to get noticed. Am really hoping to get his job to get my foot in the door here. And, I love teaching SpEd resource. Have been mostly teaching SpEd for almost 20 years.
