dfer-funded pro-charter mark pollard = big loser
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 05:43 AM by Hannah Bell
State Senate — Democrats

Velmanette Montgomery, 11,115 (82 percent)
Mark Pollard, 2,485 (18 percent)

Fort Greene, Park Slope and Red Hook

Incumbent Velmanette Montgomery won in a landslide over newcomer Mark Pollard, yet another weak challenger to a senator who has been in Albany since 1986.

Some said Pollard was a fresh face, but Montgomery won big, in part due to her support for the federal Superfund clean-up of the Gowanus Canal, the fetid waterway that now has a federal budget, and her longtime opposition to the Atlantic Yards mega-development.

1. Mwah ha ha.
They sunk a lot of money into that.

The New York Times recently ran a piece about electoral races, charter schools, and their financial backers:

Mark H. Pollard was a little-known candidate for New York State Senate in Brooklyn facing the herculean feat of ousting a 26-year incumbent. But then he got an unexpected telephone call saying that a group of wealthy investors who supported charter schools wanted to meet with him.

So in June, Mr. Pollard, a Democrat, found himself in Manhattan, sipping wine on a Park Avenue patio with people whose names he can no longer recall. Then “the checks started rolling in,” he said, and by July he had received more than $100,000.

“They made my campaign viable,” said Mr. Pollard, a lawyer who supports the charter school movement. The windfall has made him a legitimate contender, allowing him to hire a veteran campaign manager and print thousands of pamphlets.

3. I know, but I DFER likes to think they are invincible.
They have been arrogant in their self-imposed mantle as kingmakers with huge checkbooks. They were due for a dose of failure. I'll take what I can get! :)
