For fewer catch-22 situations, add to K-12 curriculum how to go about obtaining evidence?

A lawyer isn�t willing to take the case on a contingency basis, and an author isn�t willing to hire a lawyer on an hourly payment basis unless there is good evidence that the author has been cheated out of a good deal of money. But few people know how to go about obtaining that evidence without a lawyer.
