Teacher Uses Wristband to Promote Evangelical Event

A teacher in Bossier Parish, La., reportedly put wristbands on her students advertising an event to be staged by Christian ministry called Team Impact. This event was off school grounds. It had nothing to do with education. Parents weren't asked permission before the wristbands were applied. What else could be wrong here?

It would be bad enough if a public school teacher merely distributed literature advertising a religious event. That in itself would be a violation of the First Amendment. But in this case, the literature was physically applied to students wrists.

That, my friends, is assault and battery.

Before you accuse me of overreacting, take close look at the kind of wristband that was used in this case. Have you ever tried to get one of these things off with your bare hands? It's virtually impossible for an adult to do so, let alone a child.

I hardly ever have trouble removing those wristbands, myself.

That's stretching it.

"The violation of one's personal space or touching in a way the victim deemed inappropriate can be simple assault."

In this case, the parent deemed it inappropriate.
