But I need this class to pay for chemo! Contingent Faculty and Health care
In a couple of recent posts at howtheuniversityworks.com I raised questions about both Democratic candidates’ health plans–Obama’s really won’t cover many people and Clinton’s enthusiastically endorses tiering of care.

As we move closer to the likelihood of an Obama presidency, isn’t it time to start moving the candidate toward questioning his own lousy health-care plan?

His plan is simply unlikely to do much for faculty serving contingently, such as Nancy Welch’s colleague at the University of Vermont, who

has taught in the English department since 2000. Most often, he’s been given three courses each semester. But UVM calls him ‘part-time,’ which means that he isn’t eligible for UVM’s health insurance plan.

As a result, he pays $356 each month for an individual insurance plan, with a deductible of up to $18,750 a year. He also has cancer and has just gone through a second round of chemotherapy, for which each infusion carried a bill of $8,200. At this point, he’s teaching literally to save his life–to pay these medical bills.

While Welch doesn’t hold UVM administrators responsible for rising health care costs, she holds them responsible for raising their own wages and spending on facilities while “consistently, increasingly and, I believe, deliberately underemploying the faculty.”

1. no health care, no retirement, no SSI for p/t faculty
But enormous student loans to be repaid? Yes, we got that all righty. The only solution is to quit teaching when you can and take just about any other job, because the only time that the status of adjunct professors enters the minds of admin or the voting public is when they consider new ways to balance the cost of education on the backs of the adjuncts.

4. Not to mention receiving only a proportion of the pay that
F/T faculty receive for teaching the same courses. I am adjunct faculty and get 40% (before taxes) per teaching unit (credit hour) as full time faculty teaching the same workload - and of course there is no guarantee of a contract semester to semester. Yet adjunct faculty make up more than 2/3rds of the total at my college.

With no office, no phone, not even a mail drop for my students to leave papers or messages. I've just about reached the end of what I can do, financially - it's heartbreaking to contemplate leaving teaching, but I'd like to have a little security.

2. Sad but many colleges plan to use adjuncts because it is much cheaper than tenured profs with their
academic freedom to challenge the administration which rarely puts a high priority on quality education.

3. The attack on the universities and on education in general
began in the Nixon era in the 1960s. This is part of the overall conservative political scheme.

My husband has a PhD and was exploited as an adjunct faculty member for years. The situation is just horrible.
