when did the "Q" get added and what does it stand for in the GLBTQ?

1. Q is for Queer
The letter is added by some gender activists who refuse to identify along any of the standard continuums of male-female or gay-straight. As a political noun (distinct from its use as an epithet), "queer" is also used as a catch-all for people that do not fit the traditional one male, one female heterosexual dynamic.

6. It depends on who you ask, and who is using the acronym
Personally, I've seen it used to mean "queer." I've also seen it with two Qs, soth that those who identify as queer and those who identify as question don't feel left out.

This is one of the big reasons why I don't like using an alphabet soup approach to inclusivity.

17. I always thought it was questioning, too. Sometimes an "I" is added for Intersexed.

15. As I understand the political theory...
"Sexual minority" emphasizes sexual activity, which is a small part of a person's total identity. Also, the kind of person who uses "queer" in a political sense would say that the presumed norm is the minority and that most people are queer to some extent. The expression "sexual minority" also has a clinical, legalistic feel.

21. my three very straight nephews told me they're bisexual
said they hadn't met a guy they were interested in yet and even want to marry their girlfriends, but a gay fling wasn't off the table.

Cracked me up.

Bisexual-on-hold.

Actually if there is such a thing as a gay gene, then my entire family has the bi gene, and I got storeees.

There are plenty of people who live a good portion of their lives just going about and doing what they think is 'normal', and it takes a while to figure out what part of them doesn't fit the facade they've been using for most of their lives.

Sometimes it'll even be a case of "I think I might be gay." then when they finally come to terms with themselves they end up realizing, "Nope, not gay. Just not a stereotypical guy/girl." :P

Unfortunately, it is still an active epithet and efforts to "reclaim" it have not been very successful.
