A Question For Any HGTV Fans Out There!
Hi! My wife (DUer ChicaAzul) and I just got cable 2 weeks ago and she has become addicted to HGTV (its starting to hook me too!).

I have noticed that some of the home owners that they work with are Gay/Lesbian couples. My wife has told me that this happens frequently.

My question is this: why haven't the fundies/evangelicals had a shit fit over this? Surely this network gets more viewers than "Postcards From Buster"!

Also, Speaking of "Buster", Maine Public Broadcasting DID broadcast the "Sugartime" episode a couple of weeks ago, so thats one for the good guys!

As I always say when addressing GLBT issues, We are Heterosexual Roman Catholics who stand with the Gay/Lesbian community in these days of condoned venom, and WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

1. They only watch the 700 Club
I guess the ratings are not high enough to care about for them.

15. They Can Also Get Their Design Advice From pat.
A portrait of ** and a portrait of pat, and maybe even a cross in every room.

Of course, if theres not enough room you can eliminate the cross!

2. HGTV
I agree some of those decorating shows are addictive. My husband and I always joke that we're a "Designing for the Sexes" episode waiting to happen.

I think the decorating shows on HGTV are decidedly near the end of the Fundies Hit List. At some point, it wouldn't surprise me if the Fundies petitioned the FCC to remove all references to gay and lesbian characters and have a sexual litmus test for anyone appearing on TV.

16. They Are Addictive!
We're in an apartment now due to our inability to get financing for a home (after dealing with a thief real estate agent in PA < Anybody in Delaware County PA who wants to be steered away from a crook, PM me and I'll let you know who>).

We will be getting a house in another 1-2 years, and watching the design shows fires us up (especially her)!

8. And that public money amounts to...
the cost of 2 standard postage stamps per year... and that figure doesn't just cover PBS and NPR. It also covers ALL of the arts funding in the US.

Haven't you ever seen people wearing the 2 Stamp pins?

13. Yes, but when it comes to the American Taliban
even 1 penny of public money going to something they don't approve of is going to cause an uproar.

14. Hadn't Thought of That.
They're not getting any of MY $$$ since they've taken their rightward shift. I started to get disgusted when NPR had cokie roberts on every morning during the campaign to do a ** ass kiss and a Kerry hatchet job!

4. They don't get expanded basic because there are religous programs
on the basic package. You do have to get expanded service to get 700 Club here in my area. The basic package includes 2 religous channels and 2 home shopping cahnnels, the networks, PBS, some sort of Spanish language programming and local govt/school public access.

The fundies love to shop at home and watch the religous nuts prattle on for hours at a time.

BTW, TLC has great programs and lots of gay/ lesbians on the home and design shows. I'm love those home and garden type shows.

5. Because the fundies don't want to alienate their decorators?
Just kidding guys! Jeez! :)

Seriously: is that an offensive stereotype? I'll take that type of humor out of my rotation if it offends.

10. They Almost Make Me Want to deny my Christianity.
You know, the guilt by association thing.

However, the fundies only have claim to the religious/political spectrum because people like me (although NOT me!) have let them.

7. Just a guess here, but
the design shows are viewed by adults, but "Buster", "Spongebob", and "Teletubbies" are targeted to the precious, impressionable children! They are probably counting on that angle to stir up more emotions.

I love HGTV too, especially the redesign shows, where minimal tweaking and rearrangement of furniture can make a room look totally fresh. And it's nice to see gay/lesbian couples portrayed as totally normal, since they are.

9. Good Guess, but...
...when my wife and I don't want our 5 year old to watch something we just change the damn channel.

Perhaps too complicated to explain to the fundies. Of course, changing the channel won't help you control other people's lives either!

18. Yes, there are alot of home owners who appear to be Gay/Lesbian
couples. Trading Spaces has had a ton of them as well as Doug's new show about moving up. I love HGTV and watch it about 60% of the time. I also love 'true crime', so watch alot of Court TV and CSI reruns.

21. Thank you for standing beside us.
Just a note to say that straight people who stand and fight beside us for no other reason than their belief that GLBT people have a right to total equality are awesome as far as I'm concerned. It takes a village to overturn a theocracy. :hi:

27. Not Only to Break Down Homophobia, Not Me,...
...but all kinds of hatred.

Not long ago, Plaid Adder wrote an article where she said that the Gay/Lesbian community is the canary in the coal mine. If we let those bastards get away with victimizing you, they won't stop there.

There is a great poem from about Nazi Germany where a person lists all of the people that they came to get line by line. With each group, he says "...since I wasn't (Jewish, Homosexual, Communist, Gypsy, etc,...), I didn't object."

The final line of the poem is "When they came to get ME, there was nobody left to object!"

We will NOT let that happen here. ESPECIALLY with the bastardization of Jesus' name!

26. It Takes a Village To Overturn a Theocracy!
I LOVE that line. May we use it?

Not only do we believe that GLBT people deserve total equality, we also know that the stereotypes that the santorums of the country are trying to create are TOTALLY FALSE! We go to a picnic sponsored by the adoption agency from which we adopted our son. Each year we meet several Gay/Lesbian adoptive couples who are among the most loving nurturing parents we've ever met. We wouldn't hesitate to leave our son with any of them. Would we leave him with a fundie/evangelical? 3 answers; no, No & HELL NO!

The funny (by funny I mean strange and tragic)thing is that these hatemongers claim Christianity. We, including my former Nun wife, believe that Jesus taught us to love everybody, gay or straight! Of course we actually READ the Bible, as opposed to the fundies who just let their TV preachers tell them what to think!

22. I've wondered this myself...
Thanks for posing the question. I've lately gotten addicted to HGTV, and every time I watch it's "Spot the 'mo" time. Every single show seems to feature a gay couple, male or female. The announcer may even plainly introduce the two people as a married or partnered couple.

I recall a recent episode of "Designer's Challenge" where a kitchen was redone for a Lesbian couple with children. I kept thinking "I wonder what the Fundies would do with this? It got me so upset I couldn't concentrate on the show.

I first recalled this phenomenon with Metropolitan Homes magazine. I've been a subscriber for about 10 years, and read it off and on about 5 years before that. I was so startled to see gay couples featured with no fanfare that I had to go back and look to make certain. It's like a vision of the universe as I've always wanted it; no fanfare, no fuss, just a world where LBGT is all blended together instead of a gay ghetto...

I suppose it is an extension of the stereotype, but what an interesting thing to see it.

28. In the World WE Believe In,...
...there is no room for a gay ghetto!

You know, sometimes I wonder about people whose hatred of gays is so intense that they do as brit hume and drive their gay/lesbian children to suicide (as one of my cousins husband's did to their son about 20 years ago).

Is the gay life style so offensive to these people that they prefer THEIR CHILD to be dead than gay? Crazy!

23. they probably do.
but the shows have strong sponser links like paint companies, plumbing fixtures, carpet etc.

and those companies want to sell to everybody.

in this case the greenback is a leash on the insanity that the religous right provides.

thanks for the support. I love the "straight but not narrow" crowd!" My honey and I are addicted to HGTV too. "Designed to Sell" and "Design on a Dime" are awesome shows - so clever how they make those dollars stretch with just alot of imagination.
