S.F. Archbishop appointed as Grand Inquisitor- gay marriage 1st priority
S.F. Archbishop Named Vatican Point Man Against Gay Marriage
by Mary Ellen Peterson 365Gay.com San Francisco Bureau

Posted: May 13, 2005 2:00 pm ET

(San Francisco, California) San Francisco Archbishop William J. Levada has been named as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - the Vatican department that has led the attack against same-sex marriage and gay rights.

The Congregation led the infamous Spanish Inquisition from the 15th to the 18th century. It's last leader, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, is now Pope Benedict.

Ratzinger was the author of the a 2003 Vatican directive to priests around the world calling for a proactive stand to stop governments from legalizing same-sex marriage and for a repeal of those those already on the books that give rights, including adoption, to gay couples. (story)

Levada in his new post will also be in charged of dealing with priests who have sexually abused minors. Earlier this year he said that if dioceses paid out claims against them to settle abuse cases the Church could be bankrupted.

1. Gotta go lead a moral crusade ...
have to leave behind those charges of coverups of sexual molestations by priests.

Well, don't look to the Inquisition for morality: they deal in power and terror.

2. He's not really a grand inquisitor
He has no authority to have you burned at the stake, though possibly he really wants to.

The Catholic Church has influence, but no real authority outside the Vatican any more.

Thanks be to God. :hi:

3. power and influence can make up for authority
don't put it past the Vatican to start demanding that Catholic politicians start toeing the church line or else

5. Done already!!
.
Done already!! For example, see: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20021124_politica_en.html (CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH, DOCTRINAL NOTE on some questions regarding The Participation of Catholics in Political Life) which is signed by none other than then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect. In order to fully understand the language one must be versed in Roman Catholic theology and/or its canon law and its nuanced understatements.

But it's there to read!
