I wrote an editorial piece on gay marriage on my website, to celebrate the one year anniversary of its legalization in Massachusetts.
Being straight, I'm not sure if I got my argument down quite correctly. Would any of you be willing to proofread it to see if I came at it from the right angle? Thanks in advance.
P.S. - a lot of it is tongue-in-cheek.
They're Here, They're Queer, Let Them be Miserable Like Everyone Else
It was one year ago this week that the State of Massachusetts began to issue marriage licenses to couples of the same gender. This action spawned a heated debate brought on largely by political conservatives and religious evangelicals, who voiced that this measure would violate the “sanctity” of marriage, which we all know is only reserved between a man and a woman in God’s eyes.
Or is it? If God were really pissed at Massachusetts’ defiance of His will, wouldn’t he have done something by now to rectify the problem (pun not intended)? I can’t recall the Angel of Death being summoned and raining sulfur down upon the streets of Boston and Worcester. There have been no news reports of people suddenly being turned into pillars of salt, either. God does work in mysterious ways, but perhaps he is not working at all to get rid of this so-called societal plague.
Oh Baby, That's Hot . . .
A year after the fact, Massachusetts still has one of the lowest abortion rates and divorce rates in the country. It also ranks among the nation’s leaders in literacy rate, SAT scores, and per capita income. These indicators have not really changed since gay marriage has been allowed in the State.
While Massachusetts made news as the first state to sanction gay marriage, 11 states passed constitutional amendments to outlaw the practice. Among these states were: Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, North Dakota, Idaho, and Oklahoma. Perhaps they feared that if they allowed gay marriage, homosexuals would flock in droves to live in their states, forever ruining their reputations as social, scientific, and economic elitist juggernauts. Again, God did not react to their codification of His will by showering them with great weather, economies, or any other well-deserved social gifts.
