Iraq Vigils: NYC on Friday 10 April, London Next Thursday 16 April
Two international actions are planned over the coming two week because of the murder of gay Iraqis in the slums of Baghdad.

Activists will gather in New York City this week, and in London next week, to protest the deaths of gay Iraqis, the continuing American occupation of the country, and to express strong solidarity with the LGBT people of Iraq.

Big thanks to Brendan and Ali for organizing the vigils.

Here are the details for each action that I’ve received from the organizers. If you’re near these cities, please try and get to the actions.

1. Ten bucks says this will be a bigger turnout than for the other millions of dead Iraqis
But, something is better than nothing.

3. Find it however you like
I'm not trying to belittle the situation.

However, as a cynic (which I take no measure of pride in) I can't help but see this as similar to how fundraisers to save the whales will get lots of attention, while movements to stop overal damage to the ocean tend to be "fringe."

Perhaps it's just a matter of scope - a smaller group is easier to comprehend and identify with than the overall whole. A vigil for the dozens (likely hundreds) of gay Iraqis who have been murdered or face the prospect is easier, whereas a similar gathering for the millions who have died, including those people, could simply be overwhelming.

Either way. It's not so much a criticism as it is me being eeyore.

Like the sig picture, by the way.

4. I tend to agree with you.... we as a progressive movement are not that good at getting togther

we would be much more powerful if we all worked together on common interests. We are terrible at doing just that though.

I do think the protest for this will be smaller than previous anti-war marches. Because while its a focused issue its also one most people have very little awareness of.

Its kind of like the support for GLBT rights here... after something very visible happens everyone all loving and supportive - but if there is nothing big enough to get people to see whats going on a post of great importance sinks and gets no support.
