"Doctor Laura" Supports same-sex couples

Dr. Laura Supports Same-Sex Couples
Timothy Kincaid
April 9th, 2009

Laura Schlessinger is the go-to girl for conservatives (and others) who want folksy but direct advice on their lives and relationships. Although she has had a less-than-friendly relationship with the gay community in the past, in July of last year we reported on our impression of a much gay-friendlier Dr. Laura. She seemed to have adopted a more pragmatic approach to gay men and women.

Last night she was on Larry King Live to plug her new book, In Praise of Stay-At-Home Moms. Asked about lesbian parenting, Dr. Laura gave a vague answer that seemed to suggest that she was not favorable (an issue we discussed last June). But this was followed by an exchange in which Dr. Laura seemed to endorse same-sex relationships, if not the term “marriage”.

<snip>

KING: But you’ve always favored that marriage must be between a man and woman.

SCHLESSINGER: I’m very big on human beings finding love, attachment and commitment and being faithful to it, because there’s more to benefit when there is real true commitment and faithfulness to it. I still believe, as just every president has, and all the people who ran for office, that marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman. So not calling it marriage works for me. But that two people would have that sort of commitment to me is very healthy and very positive thing in their lives and society as a whole.

KING: So, you favor marriage between a man and a woman, but you applaud the fact that even people of the same-sex can have that kind of commitment to each other.

SCHLESSINGER: That’s a beautiful thing and a healthy thing.

KING: We’ll be back with more of Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

Dr. Laura has great sway in influencing the thinking of your average conservative housewife. And if Dr. Laura isn’t much upset by recent changes to state marriage laws, then this gives plenty of folks in Iowa permission to not be upset either.

2. You go, girl! To celebrate your newfound acceptance of
such relationships, I will make the collage of your slutty photos at 20-something my wallpaper for a one-week period. How's that?

3. Is she taking her cue from Rick Warren?
"Disavowing" her earlier position? Lying sacks of shit, both of 'em.

5. Well, people can change their beliefs. Not always easy but it can be done.
And, ulterior motive or not, she's right:

(commitment) is a beautiful thing and a healthy thing.

Incontrovertibly correct.

Also, she seems to be on the same page as Elton John on this one:
SCHLESSINGER: I’m very big on human beings finding love, attachment and commitment and being faithful to it, because there’s more to benefit when there is real true commitment and faithfulness to it. I still believe, as just every president has, and all the people who ran for office, that marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman. So not calling it marriage works for me. But that two people would have that sort of commitment to me is very healthy and very positive thing in their lives and society as a whole.

Of which I am too. Sir Elton is gay. I am bi. (Not that I usually care to advertise, but I do concede in some cases I am compelled to give some details in order to prevent being misinterpreted in other ways.)

You agree with that part too?

Here's a refund of your two cents.

7. Excuse me if I don't run right out to buy her book.....
She still thinks that women who choose (or financially NEED) to have a career AND a family are subhuman...

13. Yes, granted, "Doctor Laura" is still scum. And I predict, that within days...
... she will "clarify" her statement and tack more toward the homophobic side.

9. As of 2003 she is no longer an Orthodox Jew
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 05:02 PM by FreeState
Prior to 1997, Schlessinger was very supportive of gay callers to her show. During that time, she took issue with Christian religious leaders who opposed gay relationships, and said that it was cruel to deny love and happiness to gay couples. She renounced this view in 1997. Soon, her monologues approvingly mentioned ex-gay groups that claimed they could help homosexuals "turn" heterosexual, and she attacked the American Psychological Association for condemning their stance. Schlessinger also began citing psychiatrist Jeffrey Satinover in support of her new views.<15>

...snip (order reversal sorry)

In July 2003, Schlessinger announced on her show that she was no longer an Orthodox Jew. In a series of monologues over the next month, she explained that she did not feel a connection with God, and felt frustrated by the effort she had put into following the religion. Her religious approach on the show lessened substantially after this announcement. She emphasized on the air how her Christian callers always reached out to her as a respected and valued friend, unlike her Jewish contacts, who were inclined to be indifferent.

I think that has a lot to do with it. Im not to sure about her son, last I heard he was in the military - so even if he is gay I doubt he is public about it.

Allegedly.

10. Laura moves around a lot.
She was pro-gay... then anti-gay. She was agnostic, then mega-Jewish, then not Jewish.

Sounds like she's reinventing herself once more.

Keep many grains of salt at the ready. She's an industry.

15. But same sex couples do NOT supporrt Dr. Laura
and her latest bandwagon.
At first, very early on, when she first had her radio show, she treated gays and lesbians like anyone else.
I believe she won an award from some gay rights org for it.
Soon after, she found (temporarily adopted, while convenient) religion, and a more lucrative demographic, and started to wipe shit on the gays.

The winds must be changing. She's switched religions again, and once again Dr. Laura wants in.
Her listenership is falling off. She's losing stations like mad.
Spin it, baby, Spin it!

Even Idaho dosnt want to hear Dr Laura any more.
Nope.
Oh No.
Not a chance.

I hear they're hiring liberals in the venues that people actually watch and listen to.

17. Hate That Broad.
I didn't need her half-assed approval when she said we were sick, and I sure as fuck don't need it now that the country is finally beginning to drag itself out of the stagnant swamp of ignorance where she and her fellow jackasses hold sway.

She deserves only bad things.

well I agree. That's why the government shouldn't issue licenses for sacraments.
