Talk about over analyzing
http://www.alternet.org/story/55816/#comments

Why do adolescent boys often leave empty seats between each other when they go to the movies? It's a product of the culture of male homophobia in America which pushes men to avoid intimacy and gay stereotypes

Bullshit. When I was a kid we left a seat between us and gay wasn't even on the radar. We did it for comfort. We did it because we could. We did it because we didn't talk during movies. We did it so we could put the popcorn in a neutral zone. I did it with my siblings, my friends, and my parents. I like two armrests. We did it because movie theaters don't have coat check.

To this day, if I go to a movie with a friend, I would do this if space allowed. BTW, I like the aisle seat too, is that a sign of emotional semi-detachment?

2. Adolescent boys, at least the youngest of them...
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 11:40 AM by Vanje
are wiggly.
They bounce. They tip back their seats.
They really need more room than the rest of us.
Its distracting to sit in an adolescent boy's wiggle zone

3. Unless I am with a date, I do not go to the movies to be intimate.
I go to watch a movie. If I'm with a friend and he tries talking to me, I get pissed because I am there to see a movie, not to talk.

It is not about a fear of intimacy. It is reserving a space for myself.

5. It means they can't just shut up and watch the movie.
(Oops - was that a sexist statement?)

6. When I go with gay male friends
The empty seat happens depending on who I'm with. I'm comfortable with myself and even reasonable PDA (hand-holding, kiss good-bye type). If I'm with someone else comfortable with that level of acceptable displays of affection, there's no seat between us. The friends that are not comfortable at all with PDA or are afraid that people might seem them and think they're gay insist on the seat between.
