American Idol: "The guy next door versus guyliner!"
That is how they started their broadcast last night for the Allen vs Lambert showdown.

Subtle, no?

Imagine an intro like that being written about a caucasian and African-American...or a man versus a woman. Etcetera.

1. Plenty of straight male musicians wear makeup.
I think it was a comment on the style, not the sexual orientation.

2. i agree. ridiculous to take offense
classic looking to find offense syndrome.

frequent comparisons are made in terms of style "the rocker vs. the ..."

etc.

choosing to wear eyeliner is a stylistic choice, not an immutable characteristic like race or sexual orientation.

and comparisons are frequently made - single mom, bartender, rocker, etc.

ruben was referred to as a "big guy" once. was that fat-o-phobia?

cmon

what's wrong with them.

Outreach: bad.

No outreach: bad.

Life as an LGBT in America is a lifelong kobiyashi maru.

11. Told ya.
He can't sing as well as Adam, but he looks like he just got out of bed and would ask you before kissing you. Elected by teenage girls who like their stars male and sexless and middle aged women who like their stars male and whispery.

He has neither the range nor the delivery of Adam.

Didn't Ayn Rand say something about the mediocre being the goal?

12. A completely ridiculous, but unsurprising, result. Adam is in a whole different class, with a better
voice and more stage presence, yet the boring straight guy with less talent takes it. Ugh.

13. I don't know how old you are, but I'm about 50
When I take my mom's car on Sunday, a fourteen year old has changed the radio station- to guys like the one who won tonight. She likes her music lovelorn and adolescent both in composition and vocal. Think Plain White T's

14. The forces of homophobia have won tonight
Kris wasn't even in the same league as Adam, I'm surprised that he even made it into the finalists. It's obvious that the corporate American Idol wanted him for his wholesome boyish looks. They just couldn't have a flamboyant gay American Idol winner. The winner's premiere album has already been written, they just needed a corporate radio-friendly person to plug into the singer role.

15. Quick! Who took Vanessa Williams' crown?
I don't know either. I'll tell you something else- I just watched American Idol, granted only the second time this season... last week and this, and I don't know the name of the guy who won. But I do know who Adam Lambert is. And long after no one can remember who won tonight, Adam Lambert will be a star. I wouldn't be surprised if he's signing papers right now to be the lead singer of Queen for a tour or something.

I can't say for certain that what we saw tonight was homophobia. Remember that this show's audience is the masses. McDonald's is the most popular restaurant in the US, but no one is fooled that it's the best, even amongst the fast food entries. There is no accounting for taste. But someone with Adam's talent will be around a long time if he doesn't do something stupid. Which would you rather do- win American Idol and walk away with the prizes, or have a monster successful long term career? The two don't seem to go together.

19. If you were a friend sitting in my living room right now....
I would have probably said, "You big fag." if you pulled that one out of a hat. :)

Mind you, I was on the receiving end of that once when a friend was over and the TV was on in the background, and he said, "Oh look there's Carmen Electra." I glanced over and said, "No, that's Yasmin Bleath." I guess you would have to know how out of the loop I am, but he was stunned, "You big fag, how the hell did you know that?"

I honestly don't know how I knew it- it must be genetic.

21. Last week only 1 million votes separated the two, one theory is that....
That third finalist had a following who mostly went for one, and not the other, of the final two.

And that is pathetic.

As I wrote elsewhere, One of these will have a GREAT career, and the other will have a useless award.

23. You have to wonder about their fan base...
I mean the show.

Rod Stewart, KISS, these special guests???

What demographic tunes in and votes?

What are their predominant politics?

Maybe I wrongly assumed that with cell phone/ text voting there were younger more open-minded voters than middle-aged KISS fans.

27. Middle aged Kiss fans can be open-minded.
If you were a fan at the beginning of the Kiss career you were very anti-establishment. All the fundies had a propaganda war against Kiss - labeled them Knights In Satan's Service. Kiss wasn't even played on the radio because they were too extreme. You heard about them from friends. They had the number 1 selling album with very little air play. I know they sold out in the 80's, but they went out of favor when the did that too. In the 60s/70s music had a voice, songs meant something. Kiss wasn't really part of that, they were just about the rocker image. They never were idols to look up to, just some decent music at one time.

30. Well, true, but I'm reminded of how many "ordinary citizens" loved the Village People...
Without having a clue about the inspiration for the songs and lyrics.

YMCA, In the Navy, etc.

LOL at people dancing all over America to YMCA, some of whom if you explained the lyrics would have been :wtf:!!!

(I don't know about YMCAs elsewhere, but the SF YMCA was, in the late 70's, well...)

Young man there's no need to feel down
I said young man pick yourself off the ground
I said young man 'cause your in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man there's a place you can go
I said young man when you're short on your dough
You can stay there and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
They have everything For young men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
You can get yourself clean
You can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel.

Young man, Are you listening to me
I said, young man, what do you want to be
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams,
but you've got to know this one thing.

No man, does it all by himself
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
They have everything for young men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
You can get yourself clean
You can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel.

Young Man, I was once in your shoes,
I said, I was down and out with the blues
I felt, no man cared if I were alive
I felt the whole world was so jive

That's when someone came up to me
and said young man take a walk up the street
There's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
They have everything For young men to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.

Y.M.C.A.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
Young man, Young man, there's no need to feel down
Young man, Young man, pick yourself off the ground

Y.M.C.A.
just go to the Y.M.C.A.
Young Man, Young Man, I was once in your shoes,
Young Man, Young Man, I was out with the blues

Y.M.C.A.
Y.M.C.A.

24. 38 million votes from little old Arkansas with 3 million citizens??
They have crowned the new "Arkansas Idol"!!! The fundies wanted to defeat the sinner and they have succeeded. But the joke is on them and the AI producers......Kris will be a big loser in the long run. Until AI allows only one call/text per phone, it will remain one of the most rigged contests in America. The most talented person does not usually win AI. The loser usually goes on to bigger and better things without the contractual obligations to AI. Adam is the winner in my eyes and I look forward to hearing from him. I am not really into Kenny Loggins...er Kris Allen. Yuck. Where in the world is Taylor Hicks or Ruben Studdard?????
