United Church Of Christ Head Endorses Gay Marriage
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/06/062905uccMarr.htm

With a possible historic vote looming on a measure supporting same-sex marriage, the head of the United Church of Christ has publicly endorsed the resolution for the first time.

The Rev. John H. Thomas said that the church's General Synod "should affirm the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender persons" to have marriages "equal in name, privileges and responsibilities to married heterosexual couples."

"I believe our local churches, as they are able, should move toward the development of marriage equality policies," Thomas added during a speech at Emory University.

1. That ought to cause some controversy
Methinks that this will cause some fur to fly.

My wife's parents go to a UCC church and will not like this one little bit (they live in central Ohio outside of Dayton).

Going to take a awhile for the population as a whole to come around on this one, a sad fact but valid none the less. This is not Canada
(no offense ot Canadians).

2. I'm glad to see that it's not a popularity contest, the man sounds
like he is speaking up to defend a principle. So much better than the naked grab for power/money/control that we have seen from so many modern day Pharisees who run the larger religious groups.

Welcome to DU!

3. Thank you for the Welcome - And Standing for Principal
is an excellent thing and is to be commended.

But this subject is a hot button to many people and the church should address it, just be ready for controversy when you do.

4. the UCC is very liberal
they were the first mainstream Christian denomination to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly as ministers

I don't think that it should cause too many problems, and if it does, those people who choose to leave would probably leave for a number of other reasons

5. I am confused then
I live in SE Wisc but my wife's parents were adamant in their view of support of the Ohio Anti-Gay Marriage initiative and spoke of it in positive terms on the phone to me.

They were going to vote for Bush absolutely and have been reasonably church going people.

I went to a UCC church with them when we visited several years ago.

I could be they have changed Church's.

Anyway that is what they told me.
