20 some odd years ago -- my now dead partner and i bought
this place.

i took care of him here, 3 years -- saw my dad out of this world in this house, cared for him day and night for 5 years - i take care of my mom here now, she's 99.

and now i've started the process of paking it all up to move.
oh it's gonna take a while to get the job done. months really.

my mom is going through old photos and letters in the living room right now.
i just packed up a box of old elle decor magazines -- if you're a certain kind of gay guy you'd get what those mean.

my book of common prayer is packed -- i'm contemplating a picture of my dad as a little boy while i type this.

dear lord god -- but did i live all this?

2. My dear xchrom...
You did live it, even though sometimes it seems so unreal, as though it had happened to someone else...

May your good memories sustain you...

4. Time passes by so quickly, doesn't it?
Your parents have a great child in you, and your partner was blessed to have been with you.

When I look back at my life 20 years ago, it was completely different than it is today. I honestly can't say if that's for the better or not.

I hope your leaving your home is a choice that you've made, and not one that's been forced upon you.

Sending you good thoughts to give you strength to make it through this difficult time.

6. You uncover a lot of memories when you move.
They come out of the blue, as you dig through a box or a drawer or a bookshelf, and smack you with emotions while you're unprepared.

I have a suitcase and a plastic tote that I lug around as I move from place to place... and I don't have the courage to look in them. And that's just a divorce.

You are going to go through some very hard moments. Given what's in your OP, strength be with you.

I guess I just like to acknowledge and bewail my manifold sins and wickedness sometimes, lol.

16. Dearest,
All the luck in the world. You remind me of what I need to do, go through two lifetimes of photos and get rid of all but the best. What to do with all those family invitations and letters. ( I'm sure no one wants them when we are gone) Partner is struggling with various health problems at 72, and I won't like this big house alone.I hope you find nothing but the best in your new surroundings

It sounds rich and full and sad and loving.

I wish I had words of great wisdom, I do not. I wish I could say something funny, I cannot.

This is your life and your journey, it's a transition, maybe some new fresher air? You are still on that journey and I wish you the very best and much more love and life to come.

I do think I understand.

36. Once upon a time, I read Elle Decor (c. 1993). It's all about the mirrors. :^)
I'm happy to read that you're taking a few months to complete the process and sorry to hear you're leaving SF.

There might be a new home for some of your things at the GLBT Historical Society. Anything LGBT related (matchbooks, business cards, newspaper articles, campaign materials, t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.) that you no longer want to keep would probably find a great home there! Especially photographs.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Historical Society (GLBTHS) collects, preserves, and interprets the history of GLBT people and the communities that support them. We sponsor exhibits and programs on an on-going basis.
