Chastity Bono comes out as Transgendered and transitioning

hastity Bono, civil rights advocate, journalist, author and musician, is in the early stages of changing his gender -- transitioning from female to male, TMZ has learned.

Bono, the child of legendary entertainers Sonny and Cher, began the process earlier this year, shortly after his 40th birthday.

"Yes, it's true -- Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity," confirmed Bono's publicist, Howard Bragman.

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago.

We ask that the media respect Chaz's privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time."


I wish him all the luck and love in the world!

...I do also wish that Chas can deal with the long-standing weight problem. That is so hard on one's health and there is a long history of this and this is not good. Maybe that will resolve itself when Chas becomes who he finds himself to truly be.

I wish him all the best. It's a tough decision to make. I hope he has a lot of support. Of course, Cher probably has so many "frequent flier" points with the plastic surgeons that the surgery will be free.

HOWEVER -- I live in Palm Springs. Sonny Bono is the patron saint of the right wingers here. They have a life-size (but really ugly) statue of him right in the middle of downtown.

This is going to drive them nuts.

...and I know what you mean. Hard to believe that a RW live Bono has a kid as squared away as Chas is!

Even Cher said that. He was more of an opportunist. Cher said he really didn't lean one way of the other. He ran for mayor of Palm Springs and actually did a lot of good things for the city. Then the Republicans came and asked him to run for Congress, so he said OK. Then, he probably turned to the right.

you know tom swann? we met him at camp casey easter 2006 or 2007. i gave him my purple heartshaped mardi gras beads! great guy.

6. I like that he's going by Chaz.
It's very close to Chastity.

I could not imagine going through what Chaz is going through. PLUS he's been in the spotlight since birth. That's got to be even worse.

I admire people who have the energy/desire to rupture with the mass-consumerist society that foists conformity on us in an effort to facilitate purchasing identities in a capitalistic seizure.

Sorry if that does not make sense: I am on pain medication at the moment.

14. Forgive me if I am being naive.
I read a number of responses to this story over at Towleroad and JoeMyGod. Frankly, I was shocked at some of the responses. The ignorance and intolerance from Chaz's own community were shocking. WTF.
