A gay female friend of mine just lost a job to a lazy straight guy with much less experience
Normally, I don't get into this shit, but I have a good friend with years of IT (computer) experience. Her company ended up folding so she's working for a company who has a contract with the Federal Government. She's working at a Federal agency, but her employer is the company, not the government. She's totally underemployed--she started out at the bottom, taking a shit job so she could put food on the table. She's been working with a lazy ass piece of shit that everyone KNOWS is a lazy ass piece of shit. He just got promoted over her, even though his experience could fit in a test tube. This piece of shit plays basketball with the young male boss, so maybe that's why he got promoted.

Usually, I figure bosses have reasons for who they hire, but this time it just doesn't fucking make any sense. My friend is gay, by the way. I'm wondering if that might be it.

Is there anybody out there with info or who can help my friend? All I can do is smash something, but that won't help anything. Even the job promotion would have been a job beneath her level of experience. She just wanted to be able to rent an apartment instead of living in a room in someone else's house.

1. His salary is probably lower. It's about money. Same thing happend to a friend of mine
who isn't gay.

It's the bottom line.

4. I don't think so. They both are getting equally paid
Even though she is clearly so fucking overqualified.

7. If she is clearly overqualified, the boss may think she's not going to
stick around once the economy picks up again, while the loser is sure to because of his 1) lack of overall experience, and 2) loyalty to a boss that promoted him over someone he knows was better qualified.

I hate office politics.

2. Contact a well-regarded employment attorney in your area
If you know and trust an attorney, ask them to make a referral. Otherwise, see if your local bar association can make a referral.

6. Wrong - it's the good ol buddy club.
Doesn't matter the gender - friends hire friends. Women do it too.

10. ha ha, except when 90% of the bosses are men, it's 90% men doing the discriminating
you're kidding yourself if you think it's changed that much.

14. Don't know what world you live in, but I've had nothing but women as bosses.
I think your 90% figure is about 20 years stale.

12. It smells
of old boys networking and if they suspected she was gay then, the capper!

I hope she can find work and soon. Lawsuits are expensive - I believe - may take years and it's just another drain on her life and unless she happens to have really good documentation in her favor it may even be hard to prove.

Statistically, gay women make less than str8 men or women, on average, and lesbian women of color earn the least income in our fine egalitarian system. :grr:

American dream for the select few.

13. God, this is fucking crap. You don't know this lady, she's a great IT person
It chaps my fucking hide that someone of her ability is being treated like that.

15. Personal dynamics
Alot of these decisions are governed more by the dynamics of personal relationships than on mere ability. The playing basketball with the boss may indicate that the kid is more of a team player and will do as teh boss instructs/have his back etc.

The old saying it's not what you know but who has more than a little truth to it.
