Poll question: When did the gay civil rights movement begin?
Equality, visibility, freedom from discrimination... when did the GLBT community's work on civil rights get started?

1. 1969, the Stonewall riots, right?

2. 1951
Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis. Of course it was illegal and dangerous for them to even exist let alone take any real action so they were largely social groups. It was more than a decade before things began to really move. It's not that we haven't been around and had the desire to change things, it's that it was just not possible. Being gay used to be a capital offense, and even after that changed there were still significant penalties (jail, institutionalization, etc).

6. When gay oppression began
the first couple were subversive by their very existence.

7. We've been oppressed for millenia
And by all rights, as you said, merely surviving could be considered subversive; something too few people understand. But as far as "official" struggles go....

... and let all those Apostles "wash his feet" all the time.

Not to mention Jesus blessed a gay union.
