The Gays are Getting Uppity, Mr. President
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 01:28 PM by FreeState
...

There is a creeping sense of betrayal gripping our community. It is incredibly dispiriting. Five months is plenty of time to issue a simple Executive Order of which there have been many, but until this flare up, none about priorities of import to the gay community. (More on that later.) By comparison, President Clinton signed a slew of them before the lights went out on Inauguration Day.

There are soaring promises made by an inspiring candidate and there is real action when one assumes the mantle of power. So far there has been a dramatic and increasing gap between the two. And the soaring rhetoric about our issues has grown increasingly muted. There is an unsettling fear this Administration is avoiding our issues in an over-reaction to the problems the Clinton White House encountered when it first attempted to address gays in the military. Clinton ended up settling for the sub-human policy that is DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell) and squandered precious political capital.

The silence has been increasingly overwhelming for weeks. Invite and feature a vocal homophobic minister at the Presidential Inauguration -- be patient and just keep watching us, we were assured. And we have been watching. This is what we saw:

  • Several states legalized gay marriage -- no White House comment from a White House that loves to chatter.

  • Scores of decorated and invaluable gay military service members -- who are essential to our national security and are critically needed -- suffer discriminatory forced discharges -- silence.

  • Perhaps a Presidential stop loss order to keep those valiant soldiers on the job until DODT is addressed? Nope, sorry.

  • When the California Prop 8 ruling stripped gays of the right to marry in that state while also recognizing the validity of over 18,000 gay marriages already entered into -- nada.

  • When new federal constitutional challenges were filed against Prop 8 with national ramifications - loud silence.

  • Gay couples are reported to be scrubbed from the upcoming federal Census (a Bush enacted policy intended to make us invisible) - sorry, no comment.

So, the fear goes, The Gays are being avoided - except when it comes to asking for $$$.

4. Two days before the above was written: White House: Census to better count gay couples
By LISA LEFF – 2 days ago

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — U.S. Census Bureau officials said Friday that married same-sex couples will be counted as such in the 2010 national tally, reversing an earlier decision made under the Bush administration.

Steve Jost, a spokesman for the Census Bureau, said officials already were identifying the technical changes needed to ensure the reliability of the information, but remained committed to providing an accurate tally of gay spouses.

"They will be counted, and they ought to report the way they see themselves," Jost said. "In the normal process of reports coming out after the census of 2010, I think the country will have a good data set on which to discuss this phenomenon that is evolving in this country" ...

5. The post was posted then - the date is of the post not of its writing (its a guest post)
it would have been nice if the author had edited it or made a comment about the change since the time.

That being said I dont find that it changes the purpose or the meaning of the article substantially.

6. There we gays go again, appropriating a term -- "uppity" --

A term only to be employed when referring pejoratively to straight black Americans, and not to be used by gay white Americans or gay black Americans regarding our questioning our place in society.

Understood?

13. Maybe we can just invent a new language
So others don't get all unhappy because their words and lives are made less special/sacred/meaningful/whatever by dirty gays using theirs. Then maybe we can have rights (whatever we call them) get married (whatever we call that) and enjoy our families (you get the picture) in peace.

(:sarcasm:, just in case nobody understands)

12. I'm Pretty Sure You Can't Tell Me What Words I Can and Can't Use.
And I know for DAMN sure you can't tell a gay black person what words he or she can use.

Understood?

7. uppity, hell. Color us fed the fuck up already.
If the constitution defended keeping black Americans from equal rights, you can bet your shiny buttocks that Prez O would find a reason to lead on the behalf of the disenfranchized.

But he doesn't believe that keeping GAY Americans from equal rights is of the same gravity as keeping other Americans from those exact same rights would be in other circumstances.

He does not believe in us. But, fairies we may be - we sure as hell ain't no Tinkerbell. We're not fading away due to lack of belief in us.

9. Well duh
But he doesn't believe that keeping GAY Americans from equal rights is of the same gravity as keeping other Americans from those exact same rights would be in other circumstances.

Cuz being gay is a choice you know. And even if being gay isn't a choice then acting gay sure is. It says so in the Bible and in the churches. You can stop having the buttsecks any time you want and lead a closeted life devoid of intimacy, love and joy the way gawd intended. Then you will be worthy of all the rights afforded "normal" people. :sarcasm:
