‘Survivor’ Hatch says imprisoned because he’s gay

(Newport) “Survivor” winner Richard Hatch said in an interview broadcast Tuesday that he believes he was sent to prison because he’s gay, a claim the prosecutors in the case call baseless and delusional.

Hatch, speaking publicly for the first time since being released from prison to home confinement, told NBC’s “Today” show that he believes the judge in his tax evasion case discriminated against him. He also accused a prosecutor of misconduct.

“I know without question that there are personal issues involved for the prosecutor. I don’t know why. The prosecutorial misconduct has been egregious,” he said.

When asked whether he believes that if he was heterosexual, he would not have gone to prison, Hatch replied, “I do believe that.”

2. If he paid his taxes...
he would have never been in a position to go to prison. Only gay tax evaders go to prison? Hatch is full of shit.

3. More like he's in jail because he's too stupid to pay his taxes.
Being gay has nothing to do with it.

5. Well, of course he's right -
It's systemic - EVERY tax evader in prison is gay.

6. It's cause you won $1,000,000 on national TV and didn't report it as income
you were in jail because you're stupid, not because you're gay

8. No, you unworthy excuse-throwing fool, it's because you didn't pay the taxes.
I bought and read his book too. For him to be making this excuse... another "Do as I say, not as I do" loser who makes more excuses - and "the gay card" is a very convenient one.

Not to now fathom, did he pay his taxes for that income too...

Maybe if he paid his taxes, he wouldn't have been put into jail. Try that next time, Hatch...

13. This time I think the blame mostly lies on his lawyer.
She secured an okay for one NBC interview with Matt Lauer and assumed that 2 more NBC interviews didn't need clearance. She was wrong, and because of her mistake her client is back in jail.

12. well I agree on one point
tax evasion does not automatically get you a jail sentence. When it does, it does not automatically get you the maximum sentence.

There are reasons for that: a judge has to balance the idea of exemplary punitive action against taking a high income person out of the ability to earn future wages. Therefore punishing someone by effectively sentencing them to never be able to hold a professional license and having a prison record means they are paying fewer taxes in the future. It's essentially taking money away from the government to make a statement. Also, prisons are crowded with real criminals. Also, even with prison, the judge made a reparation demand - essentially punishing him twice.

Yes, Hatch is a slimeball and in denial about a lot of things, but I think the "punishment" was over the top, and that fact in itself makes it suspect.

17. Gosh, we should never punish any rich people for anything then.
On account of they're so crucial to economy and all. Prisons need to be saved for poor people uh I mean real criminals.

Why am I not surprised you feel this way?

19. Because you're stupid and have a chip on your shoulder?
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 02:39 PM by sui generis
Hope that helps you figure it out.

You're the one focusing on "rich", not me. I think "punishment" is what I was focusing on, and I never once differentiated about wealth as a standard. What I said applies to anyone sentenced to prison for tax evasion.

Sorry Madame Guillotine, your time is past. You somehow think I'm speaking against the poor (in your black and white world) on behalf all the good rich people. Anyone who doesn't outright hate the rich is evil in your book. That's pathological I've only ever taken the middle road of rationality, but you don't like that. Now you're stalking me in "our" forum, and that's a mistake.

Get the fuck out of our forum wench. Go hag somewhere else.

He is shooting off his mouth too much.

The prosecutor sounds like a real ass; Hatch should have known better.

20. So under Hatch's logic....
Does that mean Todd Herzog will be suddenly arrested?

I do think that Sui Generis raises a good point, though...the court was probably trying to "make an example" out of Hatch due to his noteriety and reputation as a celebrity sleazeball.

The same way Martha Stewart received a prison sentence, whereas others in her position (who were NOT famous) would've just gotten a slap on the wrist.
