I presume to speak about oppressed minorities because i am one
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 01:50 PM by La Lioness Priyanka
as long as there are social and legal inequalities between the majority and myself, I remain an oppressed minority

Thank you for your attention to this matter. No oppressed minority owns oppression. We all share it to a greater or lesser degrees.

As an immigrant, women, nonwhite, queer my varying degrees of oppression should frankly be obvious to most rational non-homophobes, non-racists, non-xenophobes & non-sexists

6. I don't get it. Really, I don't.
It's not like there's a fucking reality show called Who Wants to be the Most Oppressed?

15. But Priyanka, we're supposed to be happy with the scraps thrown at us
Not only happy, but we're supposed to bow down before those who discriminate against us.

8. No one WANTS to be oppressed,
But people are. Still. In 2009, in the age of Obama. Should we simply pretend it doesn't exist? Should we take your lead and just not care?

Why don't you offer your suggestions? We are awaiting enlightenment...

10. muffin1, I was being facetious.
There is no good in arguing over which oppression deserves more immediate attention. IMHO it's stupidly divisive to argue against the rights of one group in favor of another, or for members or one oppressed group to step on another oppressed group (metaphorically speaking) to claim a place in line for remedy.

Pri's on a roll and I'm supporting her.

12. Did I really read that wrong?
I went back and read your post again, and I can see how it could be interpreted both ways! Or is it my Saturday night state-of-mind?

In any case, I apologize. After all the crap I've seen on some of these threads the past few days, my knee-jerk reaction is quicker than usual.

13. No muffin1, I'm the one who needs to apologize.
This forum is supposed to be a safe harbor from certain *ahem* antiquated notions and I should have been more careful to make my intent clear.

:hi:

9. The fact that you "don't get it"
Shows you haven't been paying attention.

14. Wait a minute, I am bright white and quite often in the minority.
I often find myself in a sea of other, or worse (continental Europeans), and when I do, I start hearing this in my head:

I started school
In a worn, torn dress that somebody threw out
I knew the way it felt to always live in doubt
To be without the simple things
So afraid my friends would see the guilt in me

Yes, my inner child was a drag queen. All these years, I have suffered in silence, knowing that one day I would go shopping, come home, and transform myself into:

16. And if we share the oppression, we share the symbols of oppression.
And it's just sad that some claim them as proprietary to their own brand of oppression.

18. Sweetheart...
...you have my sympathy. My partner is a full blood Aboriginal and the oppression I watch her face because of her skin colour and being with me is shocking.

We have to home school our children because of the bullshit in this fucked up little town.
