Anti-Gay SC Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer Outed As Gay Man

http://www.towleroad.com/2009/08/antigay-sc-lieutenant-governor-andre-bauer-outed-as-gay-man.html

Activist Mike Rogers, who was featured in Kirby Dick's movie Outrage and is known for exposing hypocritical closeted politicians, told Michelangelo Signorile today on Signorile's Sirius OutQ radio show that South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer is a closeted gay man. Writes Rogers on his blog:

"I have confirmed and spoken to four individuals who I have no doubt are telling me the truth. These men have been hit on by Bauer, with one of them telling me it happened at least five times since Bauer's election in 2003. To a varying degree I have met with and believe the sources. And, as you'll recall, I have that 100% record. This was still not enough for me to report on him. Then another call came in and I met with the source while he was visiting DC recently. "He's gay," the source told me. 'How do you know?' I asked. 'Because I've had sex with him on two separate occasions.' That too, was not enough for me to report on without confirmation from others. I was led on a path to chatting with acquaintances of the source and two former employees of Bauer who served on his staff between 2004 and 2007. They reported to me that on on a total of three occasions Bauer spent hours alone with men hotel rooms. Each of them explained that the visits were with younger men who were not on the staff of the Lt. Governor nor had any official reason to be with him. The two men each confirmed that they had not known each other who saw this and each described similar circumstances under with these interactions occurred. One of them confirmed that he was told by the Lt. governor's visitor had a sexual encounter with Bauer. The combination of the reports and the first hand experiences were what I need to maintain my 100% record of being right in my reporting on this site."

Adds Rogers: "The bachelor is a right wing Christian conservative. He's done everything from defend the state issuing "I believe" license plates (complete with a cross on them) to defending the right of schools to use corporal punishment. In the presidential election he supported Mike Huckabee."

Should Governor Mark Sanford, who is under fire for an extramarital affair, leave office, Bauer is set to take his place as governor. Sanford continues to be under pressure from lawmakers and colleagues to resign.

that would have been hilarious to see the uproar in SC.

4. SC Dems know about Brauer and Lindsey Graham, but, it's a southern tradition to 'not talk about it'
and, so you never hear it mentioned during the campaigns. What is certain.... if it were the other way around, the GOPs wouldn't let an hour go by during an election without making sure to mention a Dem's sexual affiliation.

8. Not just southern
Diane Feinstein, who narrowly beat Huffington in 1994, knew that he was gay but refused to use it. Had he not broken the one and only law he authored and then blamed his wife and child, he might well have won. It would be hypocritical for liberal Democratic politicians to out these gays.

Because he was the congressional rep for that area and they knew how completely worthless he was!

26. Dick Harpootlian did about Graham.
Called him "light in the loafers." Pretty clear reference. Then he apologized. If the Dems were smart, they'd use proxies to raise to issue.

I have to compliment the Republicans in that most right wing of right wing states. They're
so outrageously fake in their presentation, it almost deserves an award, an Emmy maybe.

South Carolina was much more serious before the Revolutionary War. But now...

7. Ref. CanonRay: "Are all these people brain damaged?"
Nah, just a little schizophrenic in their attitudes towards sex. I'm beginning to think that hypocrisy about sex is as integral to the conservative psyche as free-market ideology.

I guess it sort of makes sense. You get all these macho alpha males and alpha male wanna-be's, each trying to prove he has the biggest pair, and sexual prowess is a major part of it. So of course there's going to be fooling around. (Dick Cheney is an alpha male. George W. Bush is an alpha male wanna-be.)

BTW, of all the men I've dated over many years and decades (I'm 50 years old), the conservative guy was the worst for this attitude that he has a constitutional right to get laid, whether the woman is in the mood or not.

A few months ago, I was channel surfing late one night and caught the last part of C-pac coverage of a conservative conference sponsored by the Manning Institute. (C-pac is the Canadian version of C-Span.) One of the panelists talked about how politics is part of a natural desire to compete to become the alpha male and mate with as many females as possible. That sure explains a lot, eh? Who's more alpha-male than an old-fashioned conservative man?

I suppose that's how so many guys can give heartfelt speeches about traditional family values while at the same conducting extra-marital affairs.

That's the question. We've all heard the stories, but having enough to push it mainstream is a whole different matter. Does he have people willing to talk publicly?

15. I expect he's right, but my interest is in whether it breaks mainstream.
Somebody saying something, even if that person has been accurate in the past, is a big difference from having enough proof to make it the subject of choice on Larry King Live.

22. Anonymous secondhand testimony isn't. That's hearsay.
Nobody's going to put this on the Sunday talk shows or Larry King Live based on a guy saying "Somebody told me this" no matter how accurate his past record.

17. Here's some info:
Mike Rogers—who outed Larry Craig and Mark Foley some time before they outed themselves—has now outed South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer. Hah.

The "rumors" have been an open secret in South Carolina for a while, and obviously no one outside of South Carolina would ever care, at all, if it weren't for the fact that the Governor of South Carolina is still Latin Lover-lover Mark Sanford.

So now he definitely can't resign. Closeted gay Republicans have no place in South Carolina politics!

http://www.blogactive.com /

His wife cited this in her divorce papers. He denied it.

Linda Ketner, an out lesbian, who almost defeated a white male incumbent in a 2008 congressional race stated this in an interview. She also outed the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Glenn McConnell and Lindsey Graham.

From the interview:
I asked her if she thought being upfront about being gay, even campaigning with her partner of 9 years, Beth Huntley, impacted the race. "When you lose by such a tight margin, anything could have played a role." In focus groups she found that people didn't care about her personal sexual preference but respected her honesty. "We have more gay people serving in South Carolina than probably in anyplace in the United States; they're just not out of the closet. We have an awful lot of people in the closet-- Lindsey Graham, Glenn McConnell who's our Senate president pro tem, our Lt Governor... I obviously lost the conservative, religious crazy vote, but I would have anyway because I'm pro-choice... It got more national attention than it did local attention; it was no secret to anybody around here." She actually won in Charleston County.

There will not be a fundie head in the state left unexploded.

Also, Bauer has other problems that have given people pause about making him Governor:
As long as it was just gossip, it was politely overlooked. He has had some other problems:

-Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, rushing to the State House Tuesday, was ticketed for reckless driving after police say he drove 60 mph and ran two red lights in downtown Columbia. Four blocks after an officer tried to stop him, Bauer, 34, pulled over on Assembly Street at about noon, police said. He was so aggressive, officer Jon Vanhouten drew his gun and ordered Bauer to raise his hands, a police report said.

-Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer's failure to stop an attempted takeoff where the plane was traveling too slowly was the probable cause of a crash last year that injured him and his co-pilot, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday. A national aviation safety expert not connected with the investigation said the NTSB report showed Bauer should have known early on that his single-engine plane needed more speed on the private airstrip near Blacksburg.

-The S.C. Department of Transportation paid Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer significantly more for his land than it paid other property owners who were forced to sell as part of plans to widen Lake Murray Boulevard, according to agency records. In 2004, Bauer was paid $130,000 for a 0.10-acre parcel near Irmo, more than double what the agency initially offered.

-Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer was pulled over - but not ticketed - by S.C. Highway Patrol officers for doing 101 mph on the night of Feb. 25, after using a police radio in his state vehicle to try to communicate with troopers.

His judgement has been a little suspect.
