SLC gay man vindicated. His attackers STILL not charged.
The Nuts and Bolts: David Bell attended an all-night bash at his neighbor's home. The music was loud and most of the party guests were drunk - and there were two sleepy children who wanted a place to lie down and get away from the noise. Bell took the kids into his house - right next door, mind - and let them crash on his couch. When the inebriated neighbors discovered what had happened, they turned into homophobic vigilantes.

From TipsQ: The complainant, Lulu Latu, recovered the children from Bell's home in the morning where an argument ensued which included a gay slur... A number of the children's adult relatives broke down Bell's door and severely beat him and his gay partner, Dan Fair. Bell was dragged from his home by his hair and his head was repeatedly smashed against the pavement. Someone used a piece of broken glass to cut Bell's throat, chest and one of his toes. Bell's partner, Fair, also was beaten, and a large TV was thrown onto his head.

The men's assailants were not charged with any wrongdoing - this happened in Utah, after all - even though the homobigots who almost killed Bell and Fair have extensive criminal records including robbery and assault on a police officer. The cops didn't waste any time in arresting Bell, though, for a non-existent crime that might have sent him to prison for life.

1. Lesson:
"Don't even think about helping someone else's kids. Call the police and dump it on them."

17. Actually, lesson: Utah best used as Air Force training ground for bomber pilots.
And if the newbies aren't too accurate... "Meh."

Vini and Lulu Latu's Blurbs
About me:
We were sealed for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28, 2003, and have been happily married ever since. We've been blessed with two beautiful girls, Amelia aka "Mia" and Mavis Latu, who are the love of our lives. Mia and Mavis love to watch "Backyardigans", "Dora", "Go Diego Go", "Wonder Pets" and "Blues Clues". They also like to do what ever they can to keep their mommy and daddy on their toes. We currently live in Logan, Utah where Vini is working on his BA in Mechanical Engineering at Utah State University. Our favorite thing to do on date night is to sit back and watch rented movies at home because most of the time it's hard to find a babysitter.

5. thanks, Christa
Thanks for linking to my blog post, Christa. I'll be interested to read what DUers have to say about this.

One thing I didn't mention in the story is that Utah's gay community was surprisingly silent after Bell's arrest and before the trial. I heard they were reluctant to be associated with an incident involving young children, even though a cursory examination of the facts would have shown that Bell didn't kidnap these youngsters.

14. This is why I have guns.
Living in an area where I could see something similar taking place, this is why I have loaded weapons in my home. Bust down my door, and I'm going to shoot and ask questions later, and I'll sleep just fine. That's just one less person voting against taking away my rights, proportionately empowering my vote even more by taking away one or two of theirs.

I wish these guys had called Child Protective Services. It's things like this that make GOOD PEOPLE hesitate to do the right thing. If nothing else, I hope he launches a civil suit against these bastards, and when they're done, they're kids are taken away, they're jobless, and living under a bridge.

People like this just make me sick.

15. The U.S. Department of Justice.....
...needs to be encouraged to look into civil rights complaints against this city, the police and the prosecutor.

 - And those wonderful parents, the drunk-on-their-ass, religionist, bullshit-artist neighbors of their, well, they need to have their goddamned asses sued.

16. I hope DJ sues the fuck out of everyone.
That lying bitch Lulu Latu and her fucking family and friends, the police and the DA.

They found him not guilty in THREE hours? Shows that the jury didn't buy the bullshit. One member even said "why did this even go to trial"?

I just heard about this story a few months ago and found out he was acquitted today. I've read some blogs and the Loony Latu's family and friends are fucking lying bigoted pigs!!
