Muslim team banned after refusing to play gay team

PARIS — A soccer club was permanently banned from the French amateur league on Wednesday after refusing to play a match against a gay team.
Last week, Paris Foot Gay said its members were victims of homophobia when Creteil Bebel, a team of Muslim players, refused to play them this month.
The French amateur league said it excluded Creteil for "refusing the match on discriminatory grounds."
"It's a permanent exclusion, they will never be reinstated," league president Jacques Stouvenel said.

4. Radical?
Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 03:16 AM by Chulanowa
And you really shouldn't be saying "finally" as if France is lagging behind here. You live in the United States - Had this same situation come up with a Christian team in this country, not a fucking thing would have been done.

Good on the league, still.

7. American is further back in confronting Christian Radicals then France is Muslim radicals, both
Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 05:29 AM by Kurska
situations suck for the sane people trying to live their life without being attacked by the religious wackos.

Also how do you know he/she lives in the united states?

8. Again, I question the "radical" tag
In both Christianity and Islam, avoiding interaction with gays is anything but a "radical" notion. It's like saying a Jew who doesn't want a BLT is "radical." Now if these guys stormed the field and beat the everloving tar out of the gay team, then sure, "radical" would fit better. But otherwise? It's distressingly mainstream, really.

And because the profile says San Francisco :)

18. In terms of radicalism, yes.
I'm saying that aversion to interaction with homosexuals is not radical among most Muslims. Shit. That's downright moderate compared to the opinion towards gays found in the middle east, don't you think?

21. Not radical for Muslims
but quite radical that someone actually stood up to them and banned them.

I'm not quite sure what has happened to DU in the past 6 years, but there is a marked change in attitudes. The exchanges with Chulanowa ITT really highlight it.

15. Bwahahaha!
You crack me up!

It is a game of soccer for crying out loud... to chose not to play a team because they don't fit into your "lifestyle" is a pretty radical move to make. And not just radical but down right stupid. Not only do they hand the win to the gay team because of fore fitting but they also get kicked off a league. Well done!

If they didn't want this kind of interaction to happen, then they simply shouldn't have joined the damn league in the first place.

19. How am I cracking you up?
I'm saying that it's not radical. I'm saying that it's actually pretty mainstream.

We both agree that it's a dumb as shit move to make :)

22. I think you and the other posters are mis-understanding his position.
Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 09:54 PM by Hassin Bin Sober
He is lamenting the fact that this position is not uncommon. He is saying hatred of gays is mainstream in the idle east. As 'radical' as a Jew avoiding a BLT.

Hint: He originally stated it was "DISTRESSINGLY main-stream"

23. I would hope my lauding the league for the decision
and frequently calling the Muslim team's position "stupid," coupled with my obvious displeasure that this position isn't radical, explains even more.

I swear, DU is the only place where I can offend people by being on their side.

Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 01:44 AM by Jamastiene
They love the Gs too.

I just had to throw that pun out there.

Oh, and I disagree with you. There are many Christians and Muslims who aren't radical and will actually interact with GLBT people just fine. So, it is pretty radical.

Oh yeah, also, we kicked their asses just by showing up. Muahahhahaaa.

We can win ball games just by showing up. They are so scared of us, they'll forfeit immediately and quit playing altogether.

We are so fearsome and powerful, our mere presence makes other teams forfeit and quit playing altogether.
