Brazilian general: Gays should not lead troops
Brazilian general: Gays should not lead troops
By Marco Sibaja - The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday Feb 4, 2010 13:59:35 EST

BRASILIA, Brazil — A Brazilian general’s comment that gay soldiers should not be allowed to command troops sparked fierce criticism Thursday from gay rights groups and a national lawyers’ organization that champions human rights.

The uproar comes at the same time the United States is debating whether to repeal a ban on gays serving openly in the military.

Gen. Raymundo Nonato told a Senate commission considering his appointment to head Brazil’s top military court Wednesday that while gay soldiers won’t be ousted if they don’t reveal their homosexuality, a gay soldier in a command position “will not be obeyed by his subordinates in combat situations.”

The Senate commission, which had asked Nonato for his views on gays, unanimously approved his appointment.

Sen. Eduardo Suplicy of the ruling Workers’ Party voted in favor of Nonato, but said Thursday that he would ask the full Senate to suspend a confirmation vote until the general can be called back for more questioning.

1. Raymondo then said, in what can be only supposed as a Freudian slip for a closeted bigot:
That he prefers the gays stay with his privates in his rear echelons.

4. A gay soldier in command will not be obeyed in combat situations?
Uh huh. That would be news to Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Richard Lion Heart and Frederick the Great, among others.

(Yes I know, Al and Jules and maybe Rick worked both sides of the street, nevertheless ....)

7. It's funny - my pet theory is nature made some of us to BE soldier ants
Some of us are engineered for it - and incidentally I spray leadership pheromones in that twit's general direction, since he doesn't have any of his own.

General Nonato has no idea how rough some of us can be if you fuck with us. Insubordination is insubordination and you just wouldn't want to do that to the wrong person. Good grief, do they think that being assholes to us makes us skeerdier and nicer?

It makes us stronger, meaner, and a lot less tolerant of assholes.
