Iceland could have gay marriage by June

Iceland is hopping on the same-sex marriage bandwagon and could have marriage equality legal by June, San Diego Gay and Lesbian News reports.

Icleand, the liberal island nation of 320,000, is the first country to have a lesbian head of state, Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir.

Sigurdardottir’s administration sent a bill to Parliament in March outlining marriage equality rights. The bill is expected to pass soon and could be in place for same-sex marriages by June 27.

Sigurdardottir has been in a registered partnership with writer/playwright Jonina Leosdotttir since 2002.

1. We do have it
in a few states. That's more than much of the world has.

2. Yes, I was married this month in one of them...
Which still is not recognized by my government.

Sour grapes, I'm sure. Just seems like so many other countries you figured would have it after we did seem to be surging ahead of us in human rights.

3. We will have a mixed bag here
I cannot see the SCOTUS (as it is currently composed) saying that it is a universal, Constitutional human right, but I can see them confirming the full faith and credit clause to make the Feds recognize what a few states have been enlightened enough to do.

Look at the fact that half of the states allow first cousin marriage, and half do not. A marriage between a pair of first cousins that is registered in a state where it is allowed is granted credence in the states where it is not, when that couple moves. We will have a situation where equal marriage can be performed in the enlightened states, then such a relationship can be transported along state lines, and be recognized anyway.

After a decade or two of such activity, and the observation that the sky has not yet fallen, the stains on the constitutions of the states that voted for discrimination will fall away. When there are only a handful left, the Supreme Court will wash them away, just like it did with Loving vs. Virginia.

7. True, But...
are second class citizens in our own country. Until the day that we have federal marriage rights, we will continue to be second class citizens. I don't know if we will be the last country to get marriage equality, but it sure looks like it at times.

5. Oh hell no. Believe me, we'll still be WAY ahead of most of the world.
I dare say we'll still even be ahead of most democratic countries.

12. I have the sad feeling
that there will be legal pot in the US before there will be legal gay marriage nationally. There's a bigger push for that than for equal rights. But that's how we seem to have our priorities arranged.
