Why DADT? Why ENDA? Why not DOMA????
Don't get me wrong, they should all be addressed. But my experience has been that when companies finally think it through, they come to the conclusion that if they want the best and brightest, it doesn't make sense to exclude anyone. And rewrite their policies to attract the best and to create welcoming environments for everyone, including GLBT's. So with ENDA and DADT, time is on our side...whether we work to that end or not.

My thinking is that DOMA will never be overturned without strong coordinated pressure, yet this is not getting any attention. Sure, throw the gays a bone with an executive order for visitation *priveleges*, but we need to get DOMA repealed so that marriage and all the rights that come with it can be made available to gay people.

I think our priorities are out of order.

2. DOMA is impotant to me too
Jerrold Nadler introduced the Respect for Marriage Act last year and it got some supporters. I've signed some petitions and contacted a few Congressmen including Tom Udall regarding it. I think a great deal of it is up to Obama.

3. I believe President Obama has been mentioning DADT more than the others,
so DADT looks like the best bet right now.

5. And we have focused on a public option for that very reason. nt

6. I don't think your underlying assumption is accurate.
For starters, ENDA fixes a problem that goes on right now, since despite your (rather optimistic) assumptions, people do get discriminated against and fired for things relating to sexuality, regardless of company policy.

However, the same cultural forces that go to work on these things will be (and are) gradually undermining DOMA until it's implosion. That might be next year or five years from now, but it's definitely not "now or never." It's too egregious to stay on the books.

7. You may be right, and I don't want to back down from the successes ENDA and DADT have had,
but my thinking is that I live in a state where I can be fired based on sexual orientation. Knowing that, I targeted my search with employers who have made advances in their policy to include orientation as part of their non-discrimination. And I am not sure even with ENDA that an employer that wants to get rid of an employee can likely create another reason. They have to be on board with equal treatment for all. In the end, they (as well as the military) are the losers. And once they realilze this, then change will happen.

13. Agreed...DADT should be a no-brainer...should be done with already...
...DOMA is trickier and quite frankly, it needs time to gain momentum.

11. Repealing DADT is a bone thrown to our side...
...and is in part misdirection.

Repealing DADT is to equality as the exchange is to single-payer.

12. They Aren't "OUR Priorities". OUR Priority Is Equality.
Obama is the one who has chosen to tackle DADT; and by tackle, I mean talk about yet ultimately do nothing about. He talks about it because it is the one gay issue that most Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of correcting. And yet he does nothing (in fact, he works AGAINST the repeal of DADT), because he's a political coward who refuses to give up on winning the good will of the religious right, and because he just doesn't care about gay people. Despite his lies about being a "fierce advocate" for GLBT people, Obama won't lift a finger to aid us in any meaningful way. He can bring up DADT (while not doing anything about it) because it doesn't hurt him politically. He will NEVER work on ENDA and DOMA, because they are more controversial, and his beloved religious nuts will not stand for it.

WE don't set the priorities that receive discussion in the media. If we did, the pending Supreme Court case against DOMA would be getting tons of media attention. We simply fight our battles, where our individual rights are not "priorites", but separate skirmishes in the same ongoing war for equality.

15. Rep. Pelosi - Bring ENDA to the U.S. House Floor for a Vote (change.org petition)
Rep. Pelosi - Bring ENDA to the U.S. House Floor for a Vote

The Employment Non-Discrimination ACT (ENDA) has been introduced in almost every session of Congress since 1994. Yet, 16 years later, ENDA still hasn't become law. And each day that passes without ENDA on the federal level, 30 states could legally fire someone just because they're gay. Even more, 38 states could fire someone because they're transgender. That's simply unacceptable.

Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi has said that passing ENDA will be a priority under her leadership in Congress. Yet, despite evidence that she has the votes to pass ENDA, Speaker Pelosi continues to keep ENDA from being put to the U.S. House floor.

Tell Rep. Pelosi that it's time for a U.S. House vote on ENDA. The majority of American voters support ENDA. And after sixteen years, it's high time for some Congressional action on passing ENDA.

Petition text -

Move the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3017) to a Vote

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

For more than 16 years, Congress has seen a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) introduced. Yet, after almost two decades, there is still no federal-level ENDA on the books. Each day that passes without a federal ENDA, 30 states retain the ability to fire employees simply on the basis of sexual orientation, and 38 states can fire individuals because of their gender identity. This is unacceptable.

H.R. 3017, the U.S. House version of ENDA, is ready to be sent to the U.S. House floor for a vote. As you've said previously, passing ENDA must be a priority for the 111th Congress. The next step, in order to move ENDA forward, is for you to free the bill up and move it for a vote.

We know that majorities in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House support ENDA. We also know that a majority of American voters believe that it's morally wrong to fire someone from their job because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Couple these two things together, and there's simply no reason to hold up a vote on ENDA.

Please, let's move this process forward. I urge you to free up ENDA for a vote in the U.S. House.
