Denver Post: 'White House is facing a budding revolt' over its DADT strategy
Source: Americablog Gay

Pressure is building among some allies on Capitol Hill to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell "this year." But, there's push back for that approach coming from the White House according to the Denver Post:
Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., among the Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee backing the move, said the committee was "within a vote or two" of including repeal in the must- pass legislation. He met with three discharged members of the military Tuesday, using their stories to highlight the need for repeal this year.

Rep. Jared Polis, a Boulder Democrat and one of three openly gay members of Congress, holds a key position on the Rules Committee that he is willing to use to insert a similar provision in the House version of the spending bill, he said Tuesday.

Congressional aides said both approaches are likely to face opposition from the White House, which in February laid a timetable built around an extensive Pentagon study that won't be completed until Dec. 1, pushing a final move on the contentious issue past what's expected to be Democrats' toughest election cycle in years.
This is one of the most succinct explanations of what's currently happening on DADT I've seen. And, it confirms what we've been hearing and reporting. Also, it's amazing to read that our "opposition" to our civil rights, to the President's own promise, will likely come from the White House.

Is this not what we have been saying all along? Many promises have been made and immediately broken to the LGBT community. So far, this administration has been particularly egregious in that regard. I and many, many people in our community worked very hard, donated time, money, shoe-leather, and sweat to get President Obama elected. The shocks and insults began even before election day and have continued with speeches indicating undying support of our efforts for equality being backed up within a week by the most offensive of DOJ briefs.

This "give with one hand and take with the other" simply cannot continue. While I agree that the worst Democrat on the worst day is still better than the best repug on their best day, so far we're only getting the former at a cadillac price.

Keep the pressure on. Eventually we have to come out from under the bus.

1. Cadillac
Ominous bit of a freudian slip. As in "cadillac taxes" and how that proceeded.

2. The WH needs to realize just who their friends are
And they ain't the teabaggers, or even the "moderates". They are those folks who fought like hell to put him there. And slapping them in the face in the hopes that some moderates might vote for him is an idiotic strategy.

3. I started out believing that the WH's friends were us
But friends don't continually insult and misuse people they call friends. Those are "users" and not friends of mine. I shudder to think what would happen if the repugs got hold of Congress or if McKook and Miss Iquitarod got hold of the WH. Good lord, that would have been all-out war on the GLBT community.

But this veiled contempt is wearing and it's wearing me down. My joy on last election day has somewhat dimmed. After McClurkin, Warren, numerous defenses of DOMA, and a stubborn refusal to move on DADT when there have been many promises to go forward with repeal, well, I have to do an evaluation. That evaluation comes down to "don't insult my intelligence". Don't glad-hand the cocktail-and-lobster crowd then demonstrate contempt. Don't take my money and time, don't accept my vote with promises to act, then do everything in your power to stand in the way of my becoming an equal citizen.

I'm not asking for "right now". I realize there have been heavy lifts. But there is a damn-long difference between saying (and demonstrating) "I can do this, but not this minute", then setting a date and on the other hand (QED) moving with active contempt at every possible opportunity. Every. Possible. Opportunity.

I will not call my president a liar. But I will go as far as to say that his words and his actions on DOMA, ENDA, and DADT demonstrate a certain estrangement.

4. they've had 200 years to study DADT
it's not like nearly every story they'll review ISN'T anecdotal.

Sorry, Obama's DADT stance is shit leadership. You can't make something to do with how we conduct our lives subject to someone else's discretion.

Our lives are not discretionary.

7. Obama Wants...
this thing to drag on past the next election so that if the Republicans get a majority he can say that he wanted to end DADT but Congress won't pass it. I hope all these Democrats ignore Obama and pass the legislation anyhow. Sheesh, with friends like Obama, who needs enemies?
