Defying Gravity
I watched Wicked on Wed. and it was utterly fabulous. I knew the music would be great and that it was a spectacle. What I didn't know was how deep the play was. It was impossible to listen to Defying Gravity without thinking of the ways we defy gravity. The gravity of tradition tells us that we can't get married, we can't go to prom, we can't serve in the military, we can't teach, and a whole bunch of other things.

Each day we defy gravity. Dan Choi is defying gravity when he serves his country while being honest about who he is. Derrick Martin and Constance McMillian are defying gravity when they take the people they love to their prom. Kids all over America defy gravity when they come out at school and in their homes. Gay couples defy gravity when they walk down the aisle.

We may fly alone but at least we fly free. Here's to defying gravity and being wicked.

2. Oh my god, I love Wicked so much.
And your post made me think of the following YouTube clip, from the New York "Defying Inequality" concert in January 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7PmTH6eHZQ

4. I didn't care much for the book, but the musical is outstanding!
The soundtrack gets played fairly regularly in the house, and is sung along to by all. :D

5. LOVE. IT.
Totally agree.

Also, the song at the end - I have been changed for good. Fabulous. Makes me cry.
