The Autry Museaum in LA is hosting Out West: LGBT in the West.
http://theautry.org/series/out-west

The Autry National Center, the first major American museum to recognize the contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community to the American West, is proud to announce the creation of the Out West series. This series of programs, scheduled to take place over the next twelve months, will feature Western scholars, authors, artists, politicians, musicians, and friends of Western LGBTs in discussions and gallery talks at the Autry.

Conceived by Gregory Hinton, consulting producer for the series, Out West was inspired not only by the Autry's recent installation of the iconic shirts worn by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the film Brokeback Mountain but also by the permanent inclusion of the International Gay Rodeo Association's (IGRA) archives into the Autry Library (both facilitated by Hinton).

"With Hidden Histories, the Autry National Center weaves the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community into the rich tapestry of the American West,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “It is so important for Americans to hear stories that reflect the diversity of the LGBT community and our presence throughout our nation’s great history. GLAAD is proud to endorse Out West."

The Out West series at the Autry National Center is made possible through the generous support of Tom Gregory, HBO, the Gill Foundation, and The Small Change Foundation, in association with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and the Courage Campaign.

2. Unfortunately, the Autry Museum took over the Southwest Indian Museum
and "rescued" the artifacts, transporting them out of the Southwest Museum into the Autry's museum. The Southwest Museum was built by Lummis long ago to house that collection of artifacts some of which Lummis himself collected for the Soutwest Museum. In my opinion, the Autry stole a cultural heritage from a poorer, community on the East side of L.A. in order to bring it closer to the more affluent folks on the West side. Not good. Not good at all.

Can the East side of L.A. provide sufficient financial support for a museum? Not unless it is in say Pasadena (the Norton Simon comes to mind) or some other wealthy area.

Should the wealthy areas of a city be able to take the cultural heritage of a poorer area? Why aren't our cultural sites supported by tax money rather than private foundations and individuals?

4. I don't know about any of that. I have no reason to doubt you, I just don't know.
I was just pointing out that they were recognizing the LGBT contributions to the West.

6. A good thing to do. Every time someone mentions Gene Autry--
--I think of his wedding announcement many years ago in the LA Times. He married a banker, so the headline was "Gene Autry Marries the Loan Arranger."
