Madrid gay pride march bans Israelis over Gaza flotilla raids
A delegation of gay residents of Tel Aviv has been banned from joining a gay pride march in Madrid because authorities in the Israeli city have not condemned the recent attack on the Gaza flotilla.

"After what has happened, and as human rights campaigners, it seemed barbaric to us to have them taking part," explained Antonio Poveda, of Spain's Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transexuals and Bisexuals. "We don't just defend out own little patch."

The Tel Aviv group have reacted angrily to the decision, claiming that the Madrid activists were getting their priorities wrong by mixing the nine flotilla deaths with gay pride.

"I cannot recall anyone asking the Tel Aviv city hall to either support or condemn in this case. That is not their job. I also don't recall Madrid's gay organisations condemning any of the Palestinian terrorist attacks on cafes or buses," Eytan Schwartz, a spokesman for the city told Spain's El Mundo newspaper.

1. face->palm
The gay residents of Tel Aviv would be stoned to death in Gaza in a heartbeat.

Why put yourself out for people who would kill you and celebrate the deed?

2. sorry Spain that is wrong
the right wingers in Israel that backed the flotilla massacre would also most likely throw Gays and Lesbians to the "dogs" if it became politically expedient

5. Every country including Spain has it's anti gay right wingers. So why single out Israel for that?
But Israel is by far the best place in the Middle East for LGBT's.

3. So wrong.
I am angry with the IDF and with Israel - but I don't think lumping all Israelis everywhere into one big group that everyone can hate is right.

Bad Spain!

4. Israel is the most liberal country in the Middle East when it comes to LGBT rights.
So this is very ironic.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights in Israel are considered the most developed in the Middle East. In November 2005, a groundbreaking court decision in Israel ruled that a lesbian spouse could officially adopt a child born to her current partner, by artificial insemination from an anonymous sperm donor; this ruling was despite protests by the Orthodox Jewish parliamentary parties (which are a minority). Common law marriage has already been similarly achieved (which grants most of the official marriage rights to the spouse), but full official same-sex marriage has not yet been sanctioned. However, same-sex marriages performed elsewhere are recognized.

Israel also has one of the highest percentages of support for same-sex marriage in the world, with 61% of Israelis supporting civil marriage for same-sex couples.

Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Cyprus are the only countries in the Middle East where homosexuality between consenting adults in private is not illegal and homosexuals are not persecuted under law. In most other Middle Eastern countries homosexuality is illegal, often punishable by flogging and even hanging. Israel was the first country in Asia where homosexuals were protected by anti-discrimination laws, and remains the only country in the Middle East to provide such legal protection.

Out Magazine has named Tel Aviv "the gay capital of the Middle East."

8. that's just absurd
That would be like banning Iranian gays because their government hangs gay teenagers for being gay.

How embarrassing for them - they entirely miss the point of gay pride.

10. I understand the anger, but the people they're boycotting are not the
ones who raided the flotilla.
