Was "fierce advocate" a slang thing?
Forgive my cluelessness but I didn't know until recently that "fierce" was a popular "alternative" slang word, as in the LOGO network calling itself "Fierce TV"

Was "fierce advocacy" an intentional too-cute choice of words? Is that why the phrase sticks with folks so strongly (in a bitterly ironic sense)?

1. My assumption was that the prez didn't realize what it meant.
(My other image was, of course, that he would suddenly break away from his speech and recreate Living Colour's "Glamour Boys" video).

3. urbandictionary.com sez...
A term that gay men used in the late 1990s and early 2000s to describe absolutely everything that was of "exceptional quality".

4. What? I'm not sure if should be offended here or not.
Slang or not -- a brief visit to a DICTIONARY would
Do the trick.

Fierce is slang in the gay community - do we expect Obama to know that?
No. But we do know what dictionaries are.

7. No need to be offended by me
I really didn't know until recently that Fierce is slang in the gay community

That made me wonder whether the 'fierce advocate' line had sounded like pandering at the time.

(Like if Richard Nixon had described his civil rights policies as "super bad" in 1972)

Honest question.

10. The term is older than people here seem to know...
Calling a good thing 'fierce' is a slang I first picked in the early to mid 80's from dancers who were both African American and gay. It was heavy use around 85, then out of date with those who first used it. When Obama said 'fierce' frankly, I thought of a whole raft of people and places. The people were all gay men and some women, all artists, all very expressive. Hearing the term used so stiffly was humorous to me.

12. Nope.
Just lazy buzzwords, like "vast majority" or "thoughts and prayers".

Makes for some good speechifying, but that's about it.
