'Hang Them': Uganda Paper Publishes Photos Of Gays

(AP) KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) - The front-page newspaper story featured a list of Uganda's 100 "top" homosexuals, with a bright yellow banner across it that read: "Hang Them." Alongside their photos were the men's names and addresses.

In the days since it was published, at least four gay Ugandans on the list have been attacked and many others are in hiding, according to rights activist Julian Onziema. One person named in the story had stones thrown at his house by neighbors.

A lawmaker in this conservative African country introduced a bill a year ago that would have imposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts and life in prison for others. An international uproar ensued, and the bill was quietly shelved.

But gays in Uganda say they have faced a year of harassment and attacks since the bill's introduction.

The legislation was drawn up following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy they say allows gays to become heterosexual.

1. The President should offer asylum in the US for those on that list.

3. From what I understand, it's not up to him. It's up to the courts.
With this kind of evidence, I can't imagine how or why such an asylum applicant would be denied. It's prima facie evidence that they face punishment, including death, if they are returned to Uganda.

4. He could certainly make the invitation to these people to apply for asylum. That would be nice.

8. Applications for asylum from abroad are usually handled by the State Department.
If a person is in the US illegally, and they try to claim asylum to avoid being deported, that's usually when the courts come into play.

And yes, you're right that it would be an open and shut case.

11. That is absolutely horrific.
And make no mistake about it, religious fundamentalists of all stripes (especially Christians) would love to have this same sort of toxic and deadly environment for gays and lesbians here in the United States, if they were allowed to get away with it. This is why the encroachment of the church upon the state must be fought at all costs. The slippery slope from "difference of opinion" to calls for imprisonment and lynchings is a very short one.

Rick Warren certainly had a hand in the meddling of Uganda's affairs, in whipping up the homophobic attitudes in that country into the frantic state that they are in now. And despite all of this, this man was openly and freely given a position of prominence at our President's inauguration, our first President with African ancestry. Just a two minute prayer, indeed.

Fucking shameful, every bit of it.

13. How 'bout we hang THESE GUYS
Well, you can't technically hang a country, but they're terrible, most of them for more than just federal bigotry:

Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Nigeria - All of them will kill gays and they should be condemned for violating human rights.
