Exclusive: New “Star Trek” TV Series Proposed, Includes a Gay Main Character

Brent Hartinger

There’s a new Star Trek TV series in the works that includes two gay characters: a male main character and a secondary female character. But it is all just a pipe dream?

The proposed project, the work of a company called 1947 Entertainment, would continue the ongoing story of Star Trek from the original movies and TV series, not jumping forward or backward in time.

That said, according to a source closely involved in the project, it aims for a tone different from that of previous Star Trek TV series – more in keeping with that of director J.J. Abrams’ recent film franchise reboot: grittier and with more complicated characters and faster pacing.

But the project, which has been in the works since 2006, has not yet been pitched to CBS, who holds the TV rights to the venerable franchise. And, of course, since this is still in the proposal stage, all details are subject to revision.

3. I've Always Wondered...
are there gay male Klingon warriors? Time to let them into the script. Maybe they all belong in one band called the Village Klingons.

4. I'm a huge trekkie, and I think this is fantastic
There's always been rumors that Gene Roddenberry wanted a gay character in TNG, but Paramount wouldn't let him.

12. Sadly the rumors are true!
Gene stated in an interview before he died that he wanted to introduce a gay character into TNG. Then there was talk about one for DS9. Then Seven of Nine was meant to be the first gay character introduced of course in STV (and that would have been bloody HOTTTTT!)

Paramount is always the ones to back down with it at the last minute. I guess they are afraid of losing money... don't they realize the Star Trek Franchise has way to many followers to ever cause them to lose money due to some homophobic idiots out there?

5. Would CBS Stockholders allow it?
Sorry to be a killjoy. But I can't picture CBS going along with the Main Character. Particularly if it's a male character. Homophobes still make up a significant percentage of the audience in their minds. So why take the risk?

6. Gebne Roddenberry pictured having gay characters...to him, it was
only reasonable that society wuld be accepting of gay people by then...of course, the network didn't agree.

7. That's what I'd always heard, too, but this...
In a 1991 interview, Roddenberry agreed, saying, “I have, over many years, changed my attitude about gay men and women.” Also that year, he told the gay newsmagazine The Advocate that the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation would include a gay character. The character, female Lt. Ro Laren, ended up not being gay, and Roddenberry died shortly thereafter.

---
Made me wonder a bit about what his attitude was prior.

8. Is that the full quote?
Doesn't give reference as to what he really measn by "over the years"

At this point, having a gay character, major character on a Star Trek series really is no big deal in the sense that most people would not care, would not be offended, and would be welcoming.

9. The quote...

Is from the link. I did not see the article in question so cannot say if it's full or not.

And you're definitely correct. They made a Trek mini-episode with the gay characters and it was pretty darn good.

On edit: http://io9.com/5113745/long+suppressed-gay-star-trek-episode-comes-out has more information about the actual episode. :)

13. Well...
...it'll be fantastic if it is true, but I won't hold my breath. We have heard it too many times in the past, and then nothing ever happens.
