I feel...dirty
Archae asked in The Lounge about the guy in the Progressive Insurance ads. I went to look him up and came across this little ditty:

I am writing this letter to advise you that I am canceling my automobile insurance policy effective June 1st, 2010. It was brought to my attention that “Progressive Insurance” has adopted a controversial policy of openly endorsing and supporting the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender (GLBT) movement.

The GLBT agenda violates my core fundamental beliefs. Please allow me to clarify this … I am a firm supporter of equality; when it pertains to one’s ethnicity, skin color, natural gender, or age. I adamantly oppose the oppression of any human being, by any individual, or group. I am a man of principle and a man who seeks to bring about peace. In layman’s terms, I am the bigger kid on the playground that pulled the “bully” off the smaller kid.

What I am opposed to in this situation is not a person, nor a group of people, but rather an “Action.” An Action that I find to be repulsive and a shock to the conscience. Not only because of my spiritual beliefs, but by my instinctive and natural human ability to decipher between what is right and what is wrong.

<mini-snip>

Frankly, I could care less what others do in their private time. I do not ask and I do not want to know. It is a discussion that should be left outside of the main streets of our society and confined to the privacy of one’s own home.

However, rather than leave this controversial “Action” to the confines of one’s own personal life, your company has publicly elected to endorse a movement that seeks to promote an “Action” that I find to be unnatural, immoral, and contrary to any teachings I would want my children exposed to.

1. I've wondered if the Progressive Insurance company is really "progressive," in the political sense
Is this an indication that they are?

3. unfortunately, no.
lot's of businesses are for equality pertaining to lgbtiq folk or race & gender because it makes for a better work environment or affects their bottom line.

but are conservative in every sense of the word pertaining to labor, regulations, etc.

4. I'm sorry to hear that
I was beginning to think Progressive was living up to its name. That was naive.

What does the "i" mean in "lgbtiq?"

I know all the other letters. I can't place "i."

Was it a typo? Or do I need to be educated?

10. The organization on my college campus used LGBTQQIA -
those last four being questioning, queer, intersex, and ally. It does get a little ridiculous at times. :)

12. yep
And I just want to point out that I violated my very own pet peeve. I know very well that LGBT, etc. are not acronyms at all, but merely abbreviations. I've criticized others for making this mistake in the past. So I should fess up regarding my own error. NATO is an acronym. LGBT is not. Sorry for the error. :)

2. Too bad he didn't stop at this statement:
"Frankly, I could care less what others do in their private time."

If Progressive Insurance did make such an endorsement, I hope their positive feedback far outweighs statements such as the once cited here.

9. What's funny about his statement is that he obviously DOES care about what others do
in their private time or he wouldn't keep going on about the "ACTION" of homosexuality. It's the sex act that trip these folks up every time. As if the only thing that makes gays gay is the sex act.

Not to get too personal but I've been sexually inactive for a while but I'm still a lesbian.

8. Oh man
that directs you to "Porno Pete's" site. "Americans for Truth..." is about as homophobic as you can get.

13. Yeah, I wonder about the authenticity of this as well - it sounds more like
some PR firm wrote it to hit all the "points" but carefully worded enough to appear to the average joe as "not bigoted"

Peter must need money after his last trip to scope out all the doings at IML - he seems to have a .. um... perverse fascination for that event.

11. "spiritual beliefs" - that phrase always gets me.
As if 'believing' is all it takes for everything 'spiritual' to be real. I sure hope he doesn't become king of the world with his 'natural ability to decipher between what is right and what is wrong.' Because discriminating against people with real consequences of pain and suffering apparently falls to his 'right' side. What an ass. I hope Progressive just says good riddance to him.
