Va. Board Defies Cuccinelli, Adds LGBT Protections

Virginia's Board of Juvenile Justice voted to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, despite recommendations from state attorney general Kenneth Cuccinelli against such protections.

The three members of the board voted unanimously to reject Cuccinelli's assertion that only the Virginia General Assembly should enact such a policy, according to The Washington Post.

Currently there are more than 800 young people housed by the juvenile justice system in Virginia. According to Equality Virginia, 8% of boys and 23% of girls in juvenile detention don't identify as heterosexual.

Justin Wilson, a member of the juvenile justice board, told the Post that Cuccinelli's office getting involved in such a matter was "kind of silly."
