Gay rights activists who plan to enter Naval Academy grounds on Friday in hopes of discussing their concerns with midshipmen and faculty could end up in another highly secure area: jail.
Academy officials have warned organizers of the event, called Equality Ride, that they could be arrested if they disrupt academy activities by trying to talk with faculty members or students.
Jacob Reitan, Equality Ride director, said the gathering is likely to involve upward of 60 students from Washington-area colleges, and is based on the Freedom Rides of the 1960s that advanced civil rights in the South.
A primary topic of the rally will be the government's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which Mr. Reitan said actively ferrets out and dismisses gays from the military because of their sexual orientation.
